Hospice eligibility generally requires a physician to certify that a person may have six months or less to live if the illness follows its expected course. That doesn't mean the patient must be in their final days of life.

An evaluation can help determine whether hospice is appropriate. If it isn't time, the conversation can still provide helpful information and a plan for what may come next.
