The pilgrim has traveled far. His boots are worn. His cloak carries the dust of distant roads. The evening air has begun to cool. Then, over the rise, he sees it. A faint curl of smoke rising from the chimney.

A candle glows from the window.

His wife and children wait inside.

Before crossing the threshold, he sits upon the bench that has welcomed generations before him. Here his father once rested after long journeys, returning home with stories of God’s faithfulness and the good news of Christ.

Here burdens are laid down.

Boots are removed.

Rest begins.

This is the first friend to greet him.

This is “The Traveler’s Rest.”
