💙 Blue Disc Basics: Understanding Cleft Types What are the different types of clefts?

Clefts can look different from baby to baby, and understanding the terminology can help families feel a little more prepared for their cleft journey. 💙

A cleft may involve:

👄 Cleft Lip — an opening in the upper lip that can occur on one side or both sides.

💙 Cleft Palate — an opening in the roof of the mouth. A cleft palate may involve the soft palate, the hard palate, or both the hard and soft palate.

🍼 Cleft Lip & Palate — when both the lip and palate are affected.

Every cleft is unique, and so is every baby's journey. The terms used to describe a cleft help the child's healthcare team understand their individual needs and develop an appropriate care plan.
