IFTA isn't expensive — it's basically free to get. You apply through your base state's Department of Revenue and they send you a license and two decals for your truck. Some states charge a small fee, most don't.

What IFTA actually is: it's a fuel tax agreement between states. Instead of buying a fuel permit every time you cross a state line, you file one quarterly report that splits up your fuel taxes based on how many miles you drove in each state. You either owe a little or get a small refund depending on where you bought fuel vs. where you drove.

The filing is due every quarter — next one is April 30. Even if you didn't operate, you still have to file or you'll get hit with $50+ penalties per state.
