You asked to see the “hypo” we hatched last year… 👀🐢

With all the discussion surrounding the two unusually light three-toed box turtles we hatched this season, quite a few people asked to see updated photos of the similar animal we produced last year.

Well, here it is—now a yearling.

The intense golden shell, nearly patternless plastron, pale skin and reduced dark pigmentation have persisted as it has grown. There is still clearly some melanin present, particularly on the head and portions of the carapace, which is why we’ve been referring to this phenotype as hypomelanistic, or “hypo,” rather than amelanistic or leucistic.

What makes this especially interesting is that we’ve now produced two more animals with a very similar appearance this year.

Three animals across two seasons starts to make the question a lot more interesting: Are we looking at a heritable color mutation?

We certainly don’t have enough information to say that yet. But now that we have multiple examples to raise, compare and eventually breed, we may have an opportunity to find out.

🌊🐢 There’s more to Niagara than the Falls.

We’re taking a few days away to travel, recharge and explore — and yesterday brought us to Niagara Falls. Even while taking a break, it’s hard not to see a landscape like this through the eyes of a turtle and reptile enthusiast.

🧊 This landscape is a product of ice.

During the last Ice Age, enormous glaciers carved and reshaped this region. As they retreated roughly 12,000 years ago, meltwater filled the basins that became the Great Lakes. Water flowing from Lake Erie toward Lake Ontario formed the Niagara River and began spilling over the Niagara Escarpment — giving birth to Niagara Falls.

🌎 But the ecological legacy extends far beyond the Falls. The Great Lakes watershed contains an incredible mosaic of rivers, marshes, bogs, swamps, forests and rocky shorelines supporting tremendous biodiversity.

🐢 Spotted Turtles (Clemmys guttata) depend on the region’s shallow wetlands and bogs for feeding, breeding, nesting and overwintering — habitat that has become increasingly fragmented.

🐍 On the Canadian side, an isolated bog still shelters a remnant population of Eastern Massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus), a small rattlesnake that once occupied a much broader range across southern Ontario.

🌿 East of Niagara near Lake Ontario, ancient swamps, wetlands and spring-fed waterways support an exceptional community of reptiles and amphibians, including Spotted Turtles and Wood Turtles (Glyptemys insculpta).

🌊 To the west, the islands of Lake Erie are home to the Lake Erie Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon insularum) — a remarkable snake found nowhere else on Earth.

Niagara Falls may be the centerpiece, but the wetlands, forests, rivers, islands and shorelines surrounding the Great Lakes are every bit as remarkable — and worth protecting. 🐢🌎

🥰 to last year when we hatched this incredible hypomelanistic three toed box turtles! 🐢This was the first ever to hatch here at Ozark Exotics.

Every once in a while, nature creates something so incredibly special that it doesn’t seem real. This is one of those moments. 🤍🐢✨

✨ Fully hatched, unbelievably pale, and sporting one of the most unique shell patterns I’ve ever seen in a three-toed box turtle. 🐢🤯

😳 I did a double take when this clutch started hatching…

🐢 One looks completely normal.

🤯 The other two are incredibly pale—far lighter than any hypomelanistic three-toed box turtles I’ve hatched before.

At this point, I don’t know what I’m looking at. It’s not albinism, but extreme hypomelanistism? Leucisticism?

That’s where I’d love to hear from the community.
