This is taking us back over 100 years!
*
Just a month before he was assassinated in 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed a document awarding the Mission property back to the Catholic Church.
*
Even after it was returned, the Mission remained abandoned until a group of Mexican Friars led by an Irishman named Father Joseph O'Keefe arrived in 1892.
*
The entire property was largely in ruins, although the church still stood.

Trivia Time!
What year did Walt Disney film Zorro at Mission San Luis Rey?
Bonus question: where can you find the skull and crossbones symbol at the mission?
For generations, the Mission Cemetery has been a sacred place of prayer, remembrance, and peace. As one of the oldest active cemeteries in California, it continues to offer a resting place rooted in the Mission’s Franciscan heritage.
Families come here for the quiet beauty of the grounds, the sense of history, and the comfort of knowing their loved ones are held in a place of dignity and care. Whether you’re visiting to remember someone, to walk the grounds, or to learn more about burial options, you are always welcome.
If you’d like information about plots or arrangements, our staff is here to
help and answer any questions with compassion and respect.

This Jubilee year invites us to reflect on the life of St. Francis of Assisi, a life rooted in simplicity, compassion, and love for all creation.
At Mission San Luis Rey, his spirit lives on in every quiet corner and sacred space.
Come walk, pray, and reconnect.
✨ Visit. Reflect. Be renewed.
