Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 3rd. Wild Rabbit Natives will be bringing milkweed plants to Middle Springs Farm’s Happy Fall Y’all event. I will have common milkweed, showy, milkweed, poke milkweed, rose milkweed, tall green milkweed, and spider milkweed plants. They will be $5 each or 5 for $20. I’ll also have milkweed and native blend seeds. Enough for you to start your official Monarch Waystation! Stickers will also be there so you can spread the word via your vehicle or Stanley Cup. It’s sure to be a good time for the entire family. Come see me and the pugs! So get ready to get wild and grow native!

Even a small patch of native plants can draw pollinators that you’ve never seen before. A zebra swallowtail has found a snack with the echinacea. There must be a pawpaw tree within a mile of me. Pawpaw trees are the ONLY host plant of the zebra swallowtails and they rarely stray more than a mile looking for nectar. Jennifer Ormes
The native plant area is making way for the echinacea. The coreopsis will continue to bloom until first frost but not as prolific since I’m not dead-heading and leaving the seed heads to dry in order to feed birds. Hopefully the birds will scatter some seeds into natural areas and reintroduce these native species back into the environment. The powdery mildew on the wild bergamot is due to the very dry weather we had at the beginning of the growing season. This will not hurt the plants or insects at all. You’d never want to compost a plant with powdery mildew, just as an FYI.
Year 2 of my native plant species mix. Last year I saw blooms from yarrow and black-eyed Susans. This year it’s the white yarrow, the white bells of foxglove beardtongue,yellow lance-leaf coreopsis, lilac-colored downy pagoda plant, and purple echinacea. The black-eyed Susan’s will bloom later in the summer. The tallest plants are wild bergomot and it looks like it will be putting on a big show later as well. If you bought seed packets from me and you’ve not planted them, start getting your spot ready. You’ll need about 3x5 feet and sow them lightly on bare soil in October. It’s such a thrill to see it change from year to year and month to month. Lots of native bees have been enjoying the blooms between the rain showers. Don’t be afraid to get wild and grow native!
