Last week, Co-Interim CEO and Chief Impact Officer, Dawn Hannah attended an inspiring conversation with anti-violence organizations, hosted by Vincent Hughes at The Enterprise Center.

Senator Hughes discussed the significant reduction in gun violence across Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. He credited the incredible local community organizations working together to tackle not just violence, but the systemic issues behind it.

The biggest takeaway? Poverty is a root cause. Safety requires comprehensive support—addressing everything from food and housing insecurity to mental health, education, and career access.

At Beyond Literacy, we know that adult education and workforce development are critical paths out of poverty. We are deeply grateful to Senator Hughes for his longstanding support of our learners and programming, including his recent shout-out to our graduates at BeLit 250!

It takes all of us—across every sector—to collaborate and build safer, healthier communities for our families.

"When seeing people in their caps and gowns, I would sit on my grandmother's steps and literally cry."

At age 57, Dorrie decided to change her story and enrolled at Beyond Literacy. Today, she is a proud graduate.

Dorrie’s triumph is a powerful reminder that adult literacy is the foundation for a stronger, more equitable city.

Thank you to Axios Philadelphia for shining a light on adult literacy and featuring the incredible journey of our graduate, Dorrie!
