Most family businesses don't fail because of bad strategy. They fail because of what the business means to the person who built it.

In her latest piece for Forbes Coaches Council, AIIR Global Managing Partner Joy Nissen, Psy.D., MBA, draws on her own experience growing up in a family business to explain why so many leadership transitions stall. It's rarely a lack of planning. It's unresolved questions about identity, trust and legacy.

Only about 30% of family businesses make it to the second generation. Joy explains why business logic alone isn't enough, and what actually helps founders let go while next-gen leaders step up.

Saudi Vision 2030. The UAE Gender Balance Council. Women now outnumbering men in university graduates across the region. The headlines tell one version of the story. We wanted to hear the real one.

Join AIIR's Joy Nissen, in conversation with two veteran executive coaches based in the UAE, Ghada Zakaria and Cindy van de Kreke-Freens, for a candid discussion on what leadership actually looks like for women in the Gulf right now.

They'll talk about what's really driving change in the region, who opened doors for them earlier in their careers, and what organizations should know before hiring a coach or coaching firm, since not all coaching is created equal.

A year ago, we set out to create conversations that actually change how leaders think and lead.

Twenty-two episodes in, listeners keep telling us the same thing: this isn't leadership theory for theory's sake. It's grounded in real experience and backed by the rigor of psychology and behavioral science, which is exactly what we set out to build when AIIR CEO Jonathan Kirschner sat down for that first conversation.

We've talked with CEOs navigating succession, CHROs rethinking their role in the AI era, neuroscientists explaining what actually happens in the brain when a team clicks, and Navy TOPGUN instructors and leaders in professional sports on what elite performance really requires. Every conversation built around the same idea: real insight comes from people who've actually been in the room when it mattered.

Thank you to everyone who's listened, shared, and shown up for this first year. We're just getting started.

If you are responsible for leadership development at your organization, this question is worth sitting with.

Is your coaching methodology actually built to produce durable behavior change? Or is it built to produce a good experience?

Those are not the same thing.

At AIIR, we built the AIIR Method around these requirements. Across 714 coaching engagements in more than 300 organizations, 78% of leaders reported improved team performance and 72% saw gains in employee engagement. Not because the coaching felt good. Because it was built on science.

The question for HR and talent leaders is no longer whether coaching works. It is whether your coaching methodology is built to produce the outcomes the research says are possible.

AI can automate almost everything about how work gets done. It cannot care.

That's the line separating what technology can replace and what leadership still requires. As AI moves further into how organizations operate, the leaders separating themselves aren't the ones with the best tech stack. They're the ones who can pair that technology with real transparency, real trust, and a culture where every voice, not just the loudest one, has room to contribute.

That's easier said than done at a company with 34,000 employees.

On this new episode of A Podcast About Leadership, AIIR CEO Dr. Jonathan Kirschner sits down with Amanda Poole, Chief People Officer at Bristol Myers Squibb, and Vinnie Garufi, VP of HR Innovation, Strategy and Operations at BMS, to talk about leading through change, why they built a program for introverts and quiet contributors, and what it actually takes to rethink how work gets done.
