But some of the biggest decisions impacting Black communities happen much closer to home.

City councils help decide:
• Police funding priorities
• Housing and rent policies
• Public transportation
• Neighborhood investment

School boards influence:
• What students are taught
• School funding decisions
• Discipline policies
• Book bans and curriculum

County commissioners oversee:
• Public health services
• Local jails
• Voting administration
• Emergency funding and major budgets

And policies like zoning and preemption can shape:
• Affordable housing access
• Environmental conditions
• Community displacement
• Whether local governments can pass protections for their residents

The truth is: local politics shape our everyday lives.

Yet local elections are often decided by a small number of voters because many people are never taught how much power these offices actually hold.

Understanding local power is political education. And political education is community protection.

As local and runoff elections continue happening across the country this year, now is the time to learn who represents your city, county, and school district — and pay attention to the decisions being made in your community.

Tonight, committee people have a choice between more of the same and something different. Between a party shaped from the top down and one built from the ground up.

Montco Meets The Moment

This morning, our opposing slate reminded us exactly how power works in today’s Democratic Party.

Endorsements from elected officials. Support from insiders. The same network of relationships that has shaped decisions for years.

The question before us is whether that’s enough anymore.

Because this election isn’t about who knows the most powerful people. It’s about who is willing to build power with everyone else.

Tonight, committee people have a choice between more of the same and something different. Between a party shaped from the top down and one built from the ground up.

For months, we’ve been talking about a party culture that concentrates power in the hands of a few well-connected people while too many committee members, volunteers, and local leaders feel unheard. Today’s endorsement list didn’t challenge that argument. It reinforced it.

Tonight, you have a chance to decide whether Montgomery County Democrats will continue to be led by party elites, or whether we will begin building a party that is more open, more representative, more connected to the communities we serve, and accountable to the people doing the work every day.

Are we ready to build the kind of Democratic Party this moment demands?

A party that inspires people instead of simply asking for votes.
A party that organizes year-round, not just during election season.
A party that reflects the diversity, energy, and values of Montgomery County.
A party people are proud to belong to.
