Gamut Academy

I wrote this as an email to a prospective student, but it's a great message for anyone:

"I wanted to let you know that it is possible. You can do it. It'll continue to be challenging, but you don't need to carry the notion that you "should" already have learned any of the stuff. We learn things when we do: sometimes earlier than others, sometimes later.

For now, I have some boring tasks for you!

First, you gotta memorize your times tables: painful, excruciating, tedious, necessary. I've attached one as a PDF, but you can use any method. The approach I suggest is saying the whole line out loud. E.g., "Four times seven is twenty-eight." And then say it like a bajillion times. Do that for each pair until they're burned into your mind. The reason this is so important is because, when you sit down to deal with a test, it's asking complicated things like algebraic equations. Packed inside of that, though, is a lot of arithmetic. If your brain is trying to muscle through algebra AND arithmetic, it's going to be that much more challenging.

Next, you gotta start reading out loud: just about anything. It might feel weird. It might feel ineffective, but the same principle applies here. When you're working through reading comprehension questions, your brain is not only trying to handle the words themselves but also how they might answer a specific, difficult question. If you practice reading out loud, it'll train your mind to absorb the words more fluidly. Heck, you could even read this email out loud. It just has to be out loud because it helps activate the parts of our brain needed for internalizing words.

That's it! Start there: times tables out loud and reading out loud. I hope we can work together because I would love to see you succeed, but, if you do just those two exercises, you'll gain a surprising amount of skill and, dare I say it, confidence."

Hey, neighbors! Just letting you know I offer tutoring services for most subjects and most ages. I know the school year is coming up (or has already begun for some), and I'd love to chat about how we can make this year a great success!

Nathan from Gamut Academy talks about how he prioritizes helping students develop confidence and independence. Like his co-op teacher shared with him when he was student teaching, Nathan wants to “work himself out of a job.” In other words, he wants to equip his students with so much confidence and independence that they realize they can continue learning on their own.
