Yom Kippur, a Jewish holy day known as the Day of Atonement, is a time for prayer, reflection, seeking forgiveness, and thinking about how we treat one another. These ideas can resonate at every age, as children learn to understand others’ feelings, work through disagreements, make amends, and recognize that each day brings a new opportunity to make a kind choice.

At FELS, kindness, empathy, responsibility, and community are part of children’s everyday learning. Whether or not your family observes Yom Kippur, these are values we can all carry with us.

May this day bring peace, healing, and renewed hope to all who observe.

As our young toddlers share, take turns, and roll a ball to a friend, they are beginning to discover the joy of caring for one another. These simple moments reflect the spirit of Yom Kippur: thinking about how our actions affect others, making amends, and choosing kindness.

On Monday, September 14, our young learners at Lassin celebrated Grandparents Day with a day of connection, creativity, and shared experiences. From spending quality time together to creating through arts and crafts, children enjoyed meaningful moments with their grandparents.

Grandparents bring stories, perspective, and wisdom that help children learn about their families and the world around them. These intergenerational experiences also support communication, confidence, creativity, and social-emotional development, which are important foundations in early childhood.

We’re excited to welcome back Tree House Books to the 5th Annual FELStival 2026! Founded in 2005, Tree House Books is a Giving Library and Literacy Center in North Philadelphia on a mission to grow a community of readers, writers, and thinkers.

Their work goes beyond putting books on shelves. Through free books, literacy programs, writing activities, family engagement, and Out of School Time programming, Tree House Books helps children build literacy skills and discover a lifelong love of reading and learning. 📖💡

A guest favorite at both last year’s and this year’s FELStival, Snapstation knows how to make every celebration more memorable. From weddings, birthdays, graduations, and baby showers to corporate and sports events, their photo booths are designed to bring the fun to any occasion.

Last Thursday, our young learners at K’tonton celebrated Grandparents Day by spending meaningful time with some of their favorite people. From talking and enjoying activities together to hearing stories about their grandparents’ childhoods, the day gave children a special opportunity to connect across generations.

These shared moments help children appreciate where they come from while building connection, curiosity, and a sense of community—values that will help shape the leaders they become.

Getting into the autumn spirit a little early!

Our School Age learners at Paley embraced the season with Autumn Silhouette Crafts, creating colorful artwork inspired by fall shapes, leaves, and seasonal scenery.

Beyond the fun, this activity encouraged creativity, fine motor skills, visual awareness, and self-expression while giving children the opportunity to explore the colors and imagery of autumn. 🎨🍁

Big feelings can have colors, too!

At Paley, our School Age learners explored their emotions through Emotion Sensory Bottles. Each child chose a color that represented how they were feeling, then selected art materials to create a bottle that reflected their emotions.

This hands-on activity supports emotional expression, creativity, color recognition, and sensory exploration, all while giving them a fun, meaningful way to connect feelings with self-expression.

We’re excited to welcome the City of Philadelphia’s Office of Transportation and Infrastructure Systems (OTIS) to the 5th Annual FELStival 2026! The OTIS works to improve how Philadelphians move through and connect with their city, with programs including Complete Streets, Vision Zero, Safe Routes Philly, Indego bike share, I-95 Revive, and Zero Fare.

From safer routes for children and families to expanded transportation access, the OTIS is helping shape a Philadelphia that works better for everyone.
