Earth, Wind & Fire - “Power” live concert performance on PBS SOUL! 1973

A young Earth, Wind & Fire step onto the SOUL! stage in 1973 and to open, they don’t lead with a hook or a hit. Instead, Maurice White cradles a small wooden box in both palms and starts plucking it reverently with his thumbs.

That’s a kalimba, an African thumb piano, used for centuries in Shona ceremonies to call the ancestors. Maurice found it while drumming for the Ramsey Lewis Trio, first recording it on 1969’s Another Voyage. He electrified it, made it his signature, and walked it single handedly into American pop. He’d later name his own label Kalimba. Before the pyramids and Egyptian symbols showed up in EWF’s album art, there was this: one man holding Africa in his hands on public TV. Most bands chase whatever’s climbing the chart. Maurice reached back a few thousand years instead and pulled something ancient into American pop.

And here’s the beautiful part. The song is called “Power”, and it opens with the smallest and quietest instrument on that entire stage. No horn blast. No drum crack. Just a soft ancestral shimmer, notes falling like water in a cave. THEN the band arrives, the bass, drums, congas, keys, guitar… and it unfolds into an 8 minute funk odyssey. Quiet first. Thunder after.

Maurice knew what he was doing. We’re taught to lead with our strongest card: biggest voice, boldest claim, loudest entrance. Maurice did the opposite. He opened a song called “Power” with the softest sound in the building, then let it grow into something undeniable. Real strength doesn’t need to introduce itself. It just needs to be rooted, patient, and true. Start from your roots, however quiet they seem. Let the thunder come later, and let it come from somewhere real.
