No new personal record. A slower exchange time than last phase. And this is still a win.

Here's how that works.

Coming out of the previous block, this athlete was exchanging between .52 and .56. Blazing fast hands, but he was sacrificing velocity to get them. Quick and light.

This phase, his exchange climbed as high as .69. Objectively slower. But his average pop time across every throw was a 2.05, against a 2.18 average when he entered the program. And you can see the ball leaving his hand noticeably firmer.

That block of training exists to add velocity. It did exactly that. The exchange will come back down in the next phase, and now it'll be attached to a harder throw.

Not every test day produces a PR. Some of them produce the thing that makes the next PR possible.

If you're a high school catcher (or the parent of one) who wants to build a throw that helps you get recruited and perform once you get there,

Showcase throws done mean s*** if you can’t do the same when a coach comes to watch you.

Gabe Rivera.

Poptime PR- 1.86.

And sits in that 1.90-1.94 area.

2.21 to a 2.09. That's a legitimate PR, and the exchange time barely moved, which means the improvement came from throwing harder, not from getting quicker.

Now here's the part worth sitting with.

That 2.09 was thrown with a .72 exchange time. The target is .60. Close only that gap, change nothing else about how hard he throws, and the 2.09 becomes a 1.97.

A tenth of a second, sitting there, available, with no additional velocity required.

This is why exchange time gets tracked separately from pop time. Pop time tells you where you are. Exchange time tells you how much is still on the table, and whether the next gain should come from your legs or from how fast the ball leaves your hand.

Two different levers. Know which one you're pulling.

Say it out loud while you watch your own throw back: turn in, go.

If those are two separate beats, you've got a two-part throw, and it's probably costing you more than anything else in your mechanics.

Here's what happens. The knee dips inward instead of driving toward the target. That dip isn't creating momentum, it's just repositioning. So the movement stops. And once it stops, your body has to generate momentum some other way, which means pushing out of your backside, which is the exact thing all your drill work was designed to eliminate.

The knee drive is supposed to create the momentum that carries the entire throw. If it pauses at any point, it missed the point.

Watch your own film. Count the beats. One continuous movement, or turn in, then go?
