Find Fulfilling Work

I think these were some very important things I did to help me learn my job, and I recommend any job seeker do them as well.

1. I followed up after EVERY interview and every interaction. Employers can’t tell if you actually want the job. Follow up shows you’re interested.

2. I did a presentation during my interview and spent about 5 hours getting ready for it. Free work is part of getting a job. Don’t let your ego get in the way.

3. I used Claude to tailor my resumes but I still read every single line. Most people are sending in AI slop.

4. I only sent 5-10 applications a day. That’s about 30 good ones a week, which beats sending hundreds of low qualify apps.

5. I only applied on LinkedIn or Indeed. That’s where the recruiters are. There’s tons of job boards out there, and trying to use all of them would only cause me to waste a bunch of time logging into a bunch of different platforms.

6. I didn’t send cover letters. Out of 150 applications, I only submitted about 3. Cover letters slowed me down and I have no idea if anyone actually reads them. I don’t think skipping them hurt me.

Here’s how to message recruiters:

1. First apply for the job. Don’t message them unless you’ve applied for the job.

2. Send them a message like this “hi there I recently applied for the [role title] position and would love if you could take a quick look at my application. I also attached my résumé for reference. I feel like the role is right up my alley. Thanks for your time!

That’s it. Recruiters are super busy these days so they will appreciate you not taking up all their time asking for a coffee chat.

Here’s what most people get wrong:

You get a task from your manager, but you failed to recognize that it’s actually a project not a task. So then you never clarify the objective, the milestones, or the definition of done.

And that’s why most stuff never gets done.

Even if my manager gives me a small task, I create a project brief for it so that we’re aligned, and this increases the success and quality of everything I do.

If you want to get ahead with Claude, you need to understand these concepts that are straight from Anthropic.

Claude.md: Everytime you chat with Claude, it’s looking for a Claude.md file, which are the master instructions. Most people don’t have that (comment “workspace”, and I’ll send you a template for it.) These are the rules you want claude to follow across ALL chats. For example, “don’t fabricate data”, “write like a human”

Context Window: The context window is everything the chat can “see” at once. It’s measured in tokens (roughly ¾ of a word each). When the context window is near capacity, Claude starts to feel “dumb” or hallucinate. That’s when you want to start a new chat. If you type /context in Claude, it will give you the details on your context window.

Skills: Skills trigger based on what you’re asking. So if you have a design skill, and you ask claude about the design about a page, it will automatically trigger the design skill.

PlugIns: These are just skills, that can be shared with other people. Useful for companies where coworkers want to share skills. There are PlugIns in Claude that Anthropic has made as well.

Hooks: These are rules that are triggered by an event. So if you have a Hook on how to name files, then you have Claude create a file, it knows to automatically trigger a hook, and name the file using the rules given by the hook.

SubAgents: These are like separate, mini-chats, separate from your main chat. They’re useful if you want Claude to do something, but not fill up the main chat’s Context Window. It tends to do it automatically to save context.

I don’t think anyone should need to pay to study for the PMP. I got all my studying done using free resources online.

Start with the common thread that links your last 2-4 jobs

And make sure it relates to the job you are interviewing for

Ex. “In all my previous roles I’ve focused on making sure clients are successful with the product. I’ve done this by building strong relationships with stakeholders, using data to understand client needs, and communicating insights to product teams to drive product improvement.”

Then mention 1-2 concrete outcomes or accomplishments

Use numbers where possible

Ex. “Some highlights have been increasing customer retention by 15% and driving product adoption. ”

End with why you applied to the role.

Don’t assume the employer knows.

Make sure to mention something specific either about the role, company culture, company approach, or general industry that the company is in.

Ex. “I’m now looking for the next challenge where I can make a bigger impact on the product using customer insights. And when I saw this role at {company name} it felt like the perfect fit. Especially because of {specific detail about the role/company culture/industry}, which I feel is part of my long-term plan to {career goal}.

Do this and it’ll set you apart.
