Meet two robots from a distant planet who join a travel carnival...and the Strong Lady Snake Charmer who befriends them!

ady Hercules is a carnival strongwoman and war veteran who fought alongside the troupe at the Battle of Belleau Wood. Her faithful boa constrictor, Cascavel, is both her partner in performance and her weapon of choice. Lady Hercules does not talk about how tough she is. She lets Cascavel do the squeezing and the audience do the math.

As Travis and I plot and outline a story, in the case, for what became Book One: Danger Lurks Below, he will send me pencil thumbnails of each page's layout.

These are rough drafts and allow us to make edits for flow, character positioning, and word balloon placement. Travis will add initial dialogue, either from our conversations or script, or inspiration he has as he lays out these pages.

Our creative collaboration has evolved from our first 10-page Sunset and Meteor story. That story was from an outline script I wrote introducing the characters and published in the Phoenix Fan Fusion 2023 program guide.

This was to be the next 10-page story follow up for the 2024 program guide, hence "Chapter Two" at the top left. My written outline was 22 pages. Once Travis did layouts for 32 pages, I knew we had something much larger on our hands.

This story morphed from 10 pages, to 64 pages, to the final 104 page "Danger Lurks Below" book.

Enjoy these first eight page layouts.

Meet two robots from a distant planet who join a traveling carnival...and the strongman who befriends them!

Baron Bearbear is the carnival's strongman, a war veteran who traded the battlefield for the big top. But the stage hasn't settled what's unresolved at home. A family factory in Tombstone, a mother who sees his absence as abandonment, and a father's legacy he's only beginning to understand, all pull at the man behind the muscle. Baron leads with his heart, mentors with patience, and throws a haymaker that could drop a giant. When it matters most, he puts himself between danger and the people he loves, no matter the cost.

Meet two robots from a distant planet who crash-land in Arizona and join a traveling carnival... and the Carnival Ringleader who welcomes them to join!

Kirby Barks is the Ringleader of the Grand Carnival Fusion, a traveling show built on scarce supplies, breakdowns, and the stubborn belief that people deserve a good time. He took in Sunset and Meteor when they crash-landed in the Arizona desert with no memory and no act. He has taken in just about everyone else, too. Kirby is a mentor, a father figure, and a wartime veteran who commands the carnival with a smile that means the fun is about to begin.

Co-creator and writer Matthew Solberg here: one of the benefits and joys I get from working with Travis (co-creator and artist) is getting to see these pages evolve from thumbnails to pencils to inks, and now to colors. I live with the pages from each step as I work on the script for dialogue and narration, so I spend more time with black and white images than color. It's the coloring step, though, that brings this world alive for me, and Travis' coloring keeps getting better with each story and book.

We cannot wait for you all to see Book Two - coming in June!

Meet two robots from a distant planet who crash-land in Arizona...and the mysterious figure who lurks in their shadow!

La Integridad is a relentless investigator who pieces together what others miss, lurking behind every corner and always one step ahead of adventure.

We caught glimpses of La Integridad in Book One: "Danger Lurks Below". Will La Integridad be revealed and unmasked to friends and foes alike in Book Two?

Meet two robots from a distant planet who crash-land in Arizona...and the Sheriff who befriends them!

Buff Titanium is the one-eyed sheriff of Cyclopean Canyon, Arizona, a lawman of unknown origin with a rocket pack and a knack for showing up exactly when things go sideways. He protects his canyon, its people, and the secrets buried beneath it with equal measure of grit and dry humor. When trouble calls, Buff answers. Usually by flying straight through it.

Behind the Scenes: Prelude

In early 2023, when our ideas for the mascots and robots were coming to fruition, I wrote a two page outline story for Sunset and Meteor: two robots from a distant planet who crash-land in Arizona in the 1920s.

I sent it to with the idea of turning it into a comic book, and giving it away for free in the program guide to .

These images are Travis' initial inks for the first five pages of that prelude story, which would go on to be included in Book One: Danger Lurks Below. See our previous post that showcase his pencils.

Meet two robots who crash-land in Arizona in the 1920s and join a traveling carnival.

Sunset is bold, impulsive, and sees the world in colors. Where others deliberate, Sunset acts, charging into danger heart-first with rocket boot thrusters and a quip locked and loaded. But beneath the bravado is a fierce protector who fights hardest for the people they love. Sunset is loyal to their best friend Meteor and the carnival family. They see the beauty and good spirit in the people around them, and when someone threatens that, Sunset hits first.

Meteor is thoughtful, analytical, and wired to deliberate. They process the world in data, inputs, and five hundred calculated steps before taking one. But all that processing power comes at a cost. When the pressure mounts, Meteor's mind can lock up, overwhelmed by the sheer volume of what it's trying to solve. It takes trust, not logic, to break through. And when Meteor finally acts, no one hits harder.
