My name is Dzamgwat. I’m Mamaliliulla from Village Island, Kwakwaka’wakw. When I dance Hamshamt’sas, people sometimes call it the “ man eating cannibal dance.” To me, it’s about facing something greater than yourself and doing the work to return grounded in community, discipline, and responsibility.

What the “cannibal” part actually means

It’s easy for outsiders to hear “Cannibal Dance” and assume it means people were simply celebrating cannibalism. That misses the deeper meaning.

The ceremony tells of an initiate coming under the influence of Baxwbakwalanuksiwe’, a terrifying supernatural man-eating being associated with the north end of the world. The initiate returns in a wild, uncontrolled state, crying “wheep, wheep, wheep” associated with eating humans. Through songs, dancing, attendants, rattles, and ritual, that wildness is gradually brought under control.

The key idea is transformation:

wildness → discipline
supernatural danger → human order
uncontrolled appetite → self-control
isolation → return to the community

When Native people disappear across the Northern Plains, families face rural isolation, jurisdictional confusion, limited resources and racism. Native youth are too often dismissed as “runaways” instead of treated as missing children. Not every law-enforcement agency responds this way, but too few give our cases the urgency they deserve.

There are only about 55 Native-centered domestic-violence shelters serving 574 federally recognized Tribes. Across South Dakota, Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska and Colorado, culturally grounded shelter beds remain dangerously limited. Advocacy and referrals matter—but a phone number is not a safe place to sleep.
