Also, the shop’s expanding fast, the tools are humming, and I’m ready to make your place look wicked sharp.Today’s chop‑saw clip is just me in the doorway, trying to look like I know what I’m doing while my truck and trailer sit behind me like two seasoned foremen wondering if I filled out the paperwork right. But behind that doorway, 506 Designs & Carpentry has been leveling up in a big way.

I’ve built out a full woodshop for fine finishing and custom carpentry, and I’m lining up a professional paint booth next, because cabinet refinishing deserves more than a prayer, a brush, and a hope that the dog doesn’t bump the door while it’s drying. We’re talking precision, consistency, and results that make people say, “Wow… you did THAT in Maine?”

With all these upgrades, I’ve updated my rate sheet to match the wide range of services I’m offering, remodels, framing, finish work, painting, and specialty refinishing that takes skill, patience, and the stubborn determination of a guy who refuses to let one rogue extension cord ruin his day.

mixed with me belting out 90s country and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Red, White & Blue like the shop personally requested a concert it absolutely did not want.

Somewhere between the dowels, the glue, and my questionable dance moves, I managed to trip over a sawhorse (twice), recover like a champ, and keep the project moving.

Meanwhile, my trusty assistant Tommy got absolutely obliterated by sanding dust and now looks like the Abominable Dust Man, just wandering around the shop like a confused snow creature who’s questioning all his life choices.Despite all the chaos, the panel came out perfect.

Final install pics coming later, assuming Tommy doesn’t sneeze and turn the shop into a blizzard again.

Watching sanding dust blow off a shiplap plank, that moment when the wood underneath shows its true grit again. It always brings me back to where this all started.

My great‑grandfather was a craftsman up in Eddington, Maine. A WWII vet with a backbone like oak and a personality strong as wh***ey. I never had the chance to meet him, (born a few too many years to late) but I was handed down his old hand planers, worn smooth from decades of honest, hard Maine work.

Those tools sit in my shop today, and every time I’m sanding down a board or bringing a vintage stain back to life, I feel like I’m working right alongside him.

Same values.
Same pride.
Same respect for the wood.

At 506 Designs & Carpentry, we’re built on that foundation. True fine carpentry. Skilled hands. No shortcuts. We focus on the kind of craftsmanship that’s been keeping Maine homes standing tall for generations.

My hope is that his legacy keeps living on through the work we do, breathing life back into old boards, old stains, and the old ways that deserve to stick around. We also value sourcing as much of our lumber from local sawmills as we possibly can. Nothing beats Maine Pine boards. We are the pine tree state after all.

Maybe I'll be able to convince my wife to let me buy a portable saw mill 🤔.

We showed up with a mini skid steer and an auger.

The plan? Drill a few holes, drop in the sonotubes, and move on with our day. The ground had other plans. After arguing with rocks the size of small appliances, we finally called in the excavator to help convince the earth to cooperate. All this just to make sure the support tubes sit at the correct depth and the new stairs and landing have the structure they deserve.

Carpentry: where you start with a simple hole and end up doing a full excavation because Maine’s soil likes to keep things interesting.
