9/9/26.My mother used to tell me: "Don't complain about it. Do something about it."

That's been my rule at the State House. When our rights are threatened, whether by powerful interests here at home or by Washington, I don't complain. I do the work: protecting and expanding civil rights for every Rhode Islander.

Over the next two weeks I'll share what that work has looked like and the impact we've had for Rhode Islanders.

This year we passed a tax on income over a million dollars, $115 million to raise Medicaid rates and rebuild our healthcare workforce, and a new $330-per-child tax credit for working families.

Powerful interests have plenty of lobbyists at the State House. My job is to stand up for everyone else.

My first career was as a social caseworker in Harlem in the 1960s. In two years there, I learned more from my clients about how to get by than I could ever help them.

I've taken on the fossil fuel industry and supported Act on Climate, given neighborhoods a voice in transit decisions, protected forests while growing solar, and help expand more cost effective renewable energy sources. Now I am working to make our utility answer to ratepayers, not shareholders.

The climate fight is also a fairness fight. It matters most to the neighborhoods closest to the pollution and to families deciding between the electric bill and groceries.

I cannot say thank you enough to everyone who has volunteered for us so far. 45 days until the election and I am thankful for the help of so many friends and colleagues.

For more than a decade I sponsored the bill to write reproductive freedom into Rhode Island law. I kept working with my colleagues to propose the legislation session after session until the protections passed in 2019. When the Supreme Court overturned Roe, Rhode Islanders were protected.

There is more to do. We need to defend that law, expand access to birth control, and hold the line while Washington works to roll back our rights.

Wear comfortable walking clothes for a 1.5 hr canvass (estimated temp mid 70s and clear skies). We will provide pam cards, scripts, and turfs, and a brief training for canvassers. No experience required.

As RI experiences more and more extreme heat and other harm from climate change, I was proud to stand with Climate Action RI , the Environmental Council of RI, the Green Energy Consumers Alliance and colleagues in the RI House and Senate to call on the general assembly to override Governor McKee's irresponsible veto of the building benchmarking bill.

We need to understand the carbon emissions output of our largest buildings across the state (the 2nd largest source of emissions) to better understand how we can reasonably set standards to lower those emissions, and do our part to avert the worst effects of the climate change on Rhode Island.

I will continue fighting for solutions to the climate crisis such as this and not let the corrosive influence of special interests derail this common sense policy.

Today I filed my declaration of candidacy to run for reelection as the State Representative for Rhode Island‘s house district 1. I am honored to have the privilege of representing our community in the House of Representatives, and I still have much work to accomplish on some of the most pressing issues facing the people of our State. I look forward to re-earning the support of the voters of Providence this summer!
