🌰 Fruity Friday with Kelly Perry: Meet the Bur Oak!

Big acorns, big personality. The Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) produces some of the largest acorns of any North American oak, easily recognized by their distinctive, fringed “caps.”

A fall favorite for wildlife—and a pretty impressive fruit, if you ask us. Discover Fall's treasures at Swan Point with our seasonal change of hours: 8AM - 5PM 🍂🌳

There’s still room for what matters.

Room for a final resting place.
Room for a family tradition.
Room for a quiet corner beneath the trees.
Room to plan for the future.

There’s still room at Swan Point. 🌿

🍓 It's Fruity Friday!

Who needs raspberries when you have a Kousa Dogwood? 👀🌳

These little lookalikes may resemble a pile of giant raspberries, but they’re actually the unique fruit of the Kousa Dogwood. They start out green, then blush into these rosy-red bumpy seed pods as summer gives way to fall.

Pretty enough to admire—and yes, you can eat it too. The soft inner pulp is completely edible, with a sweet, tropical flavor reminiscent of persimmon or ripe peach, and can be eaten fresh or used for jams and jellies.

Talk about an overachiever. 😉🍓

Trailblazer Tuesday 🎨Before his art traveled across the country, Eugene Kingman’s story began right here in Rhode Island.

Born in Providence in 1909, Kingman developed an early fascination with art, science, and the natural world. He went on to earn degrees in both geology and fine arts from Yale—but his Rhode Island roots remained an important part of his life. After graduation, he returned to Providence to teach lithography and mural painting at the Rhode Island School of Design.

During the New Deal era, Kingman was commissioned to create a series of murals for the East Providence Post Office. Completed in 1939, the murals depicted scenes of the city and the Seekonk River, along with the dramatic aftermath of the devastating 1938 hurricane. They remain a remarkable example of how Kingman brought art, history, and a strong sense of place together.

His career would take him far beyond Rhode Island. Kingman became a celebrated Regionalist painter, museum director, cartographer, and designer, with artwork found in museums and public spaces throughout the country.

Today, this remarkable Rhode Island-born artist rests here at Swan Point Cemetery. G: 152/L: 26

🍁 Fruity Friday! 🍁with Horticulturist Kelly Perry

Fall is beginning to show off at Swan Point. Today’s little treasures are the winged seed pods of Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’—a beautiful reminder that even as the leaves begin to change, there’s still plenty to discover. 🍂

Keep an eye out for more of nature’s fall “fruits” around the cemetery!

For some, choosing how we are laid to rest is also a way of expressing what matters to us in life—our connection to nature, our values, and the legacy we leave behind.
Swan Point is proud to be the only cemetery in the greater Providence area certified by the Green Burial Council, a national organization dedicated to natural burial and environmental stewardship.
Green burial offers an alternative that minimizes environmental impact while helping conserve natural resources, reduce carbon emissions, and preserve or restore habitat.
At Swan Point, we’re proud to offer this choice—because each life deserves to be remembered in in its own way. 🌱https://swanpointcemetery.com/green-natural-burial/about-green-natural-burial/
