Got questions about ELF 3.0? Organic Transit’s founder Rob Cotter is going live on August 12 at 1:00 PM Eastern / 10:00 AM Pacific for a Q&A.
We'll cover the questions we’re hearing most about the investment opportunity, the vehicle itself, production progress, what we changed and why. Then we'll open it up to your questions and answer live.

Can a vehicle generate more energy than it consumes? That’s the question behind the ELF 3.0 design.

Felipe Witchger discovered the ELF back in 2013, walking past our Durham factory on his way to the farmer's market 🚲⚡
Today, Felipe is an Impact Investor and Executive Director of the Francesco Collaborative. He's spent years evaluating small businesses and social enterprises, including five years as a direct investor.
Felipe has a personal framework he uses to evaluate where he puts his own money. Alongside financial return, he tracks what he calls a "livable future return," a measure of what a given investment means for the world his kids and grandkids will inherit over the next 10, 20, 40 years.

Ever wonder where the ELF actually gets built?
Right here, at Organic Transit's facility in Durham, North Carolina. The building runs on solar power and is fully off-grid, and the team even brews its own biodiesel on site from used french fry oil for shipping needs.
This same facility houses Organic Transit's parts and service operation, supporting every ELF owner on the road today with the parts and repairs they need to keep going.

The number one thing strangers ask when they see an ELF in the wild: "Why does it look like that?"
The short answer: it was designed around airflow, not convention.
The ELF's curved pod shape comes from founder Rob Cotter's time as VP of the International Human Powered Vehicle Association in the 1980s, where streamlined human-powered vehicles ran at 60 to 70 mph on half a horsepower. Organic curves move through air more efficiently than flat, angular surfaces. Resolved Analytics measured the legacy ELF at a drag coefficient of 0.32 at 20 mph, comparable to a Tour de France racing bicycle.
The body also deflects crosswinds, sheds rain, and forms a structural safety cell. ELF 3.0 keeps this geometry and targets an improved drag coefficient. Rob calls this evolution epigenetic: the same bio-inspired design, with decades of learning layered in.
The shape isn't aesthetic. It's the engineering.

Still looking for a charger? ELF 3.0 charges itself. Rob's latest Wefunder update explains why solar mobility, and planned ELF-to-home capability, matters more right now than ever. Read the full update → https://wefunder.com/organic.transit/feed/343693-the-future-is-solar-anywhere
The ELF came from a simple observation: the gap between an e-bike and a car is enormous and nobody was building anything in between, so we did.
I've been designing and building human-powered and solar-assisted vehicles for over 30 years. I started out in California working on Porsche and BMW race cars. That led me to the world of high efficiency vehicles and eventually to founding and running a vehicle company all the way through full production. I've done the manufacturing gauntlet before. I know what it costs to get a vehicle from concept to driveway, and I know what it takes to keep it there.
We launched on Kickstarter in December 2012, sold 51 vehicles, and delivered all of them by August. From there, we kept building, kept iterating, and ultimately delivered over 850 ELFs across all 50 states and more than 15 countries with 10 million miles logged from real riders in the real world. To anyone wondering where the prototype is: there are 850 of them.

We are now approaching $330,000 on Wefunder, with more than 140 investors backing the next chapter of Organic Transit!
What makes all of this meaningful is the community forming around ELF 3.0. Our investors are not all coming to the campaign for the same reason. Some have followed Organic Transit for years and understand the history, the engineering, and the vision behind the ELF. Others are discovering the vehicle for the first time and immediately seeing how it fits into their neighborhood, their commute, their business, or their life.
This is a community of practical thinkers, sustainability-minded supporters, first-time crowdfunding participants, and seasoned investors who've spent years watching the micro-mobility and clean energy spaces evolve. Many are drawn into the E2H home energy backup system, the only vehicle in this category to offer this option.
Momentum is building and the people joining this campaign are exactly the kind of community that carries it forward!

We have officially crossed $300,000 raised on Wefunder!
Total commitments roughly doubled in the last few weeks (read the full update here: https://wefunder.com/organic.transit/feed/328853-investments-in-elf-doubled-in-the-past-few-weeks).
With gas prices shaping how people think about their budgets and everyday transportation, we are seeing more investors pay attention to the ELF’s cost-effective way to get around.
The original ELF gives us a very unique upper hand. We have already delivered more than 850 ELFs, and that history gives us two things that matter: proof that Organic Transit can execute, and proof that people want a vehicle like this in their daily lives.
The ELF has been used for commuting, deliveries, resorts, campuses, school drop-offs, grocery runs, and all the wonderfully ordinary things that happen when a vehicle becomes part of someone’s routine. So, as we move into ELF 3.0, we are building from proven demand, owner feedback, and more than 10 million real world miles.
If you know someone who would benefit from not using a full-size car for every errand, send them our campaign.
