CLOSE CALL: Recently, a Caltrans District 2 maintenance crew was performing emergency pothole repairs on Interstate 5 in the Yreka area when the on-site California Highway Patrol officer received word that a pursuit by the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office was heading directly toward the work zone.

The CHP officer immediately alerted our crew, giving them time to safely clear the roadway before the vehicle entered the work zone — traveling at approximately 125 mph.

We are incredibly thankful for our partnership with CHP and, especially, for this officer’s quick action to help get our crew out of harm’s way.

This is just one example of the dangers our maintenance crews can face while working on the highway. And unfortunately, our crews don’t always have a CHP officer nearby to warn them when danger is coming.

When you see Caltrans workers on the roadway, please slow down, move over when possible, and stay alert. Our crews are someone’s family, someone’s friend and someone who deserves to make it home safely at the end of the day.
