ISR Reno Tahoe

The problem: drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 4 and under.

Imagine how you would feel if your child had a built in layer of protection against drowning.

Imagine how this would feel on vacation. Or next summer at the pool or water park.

One week before the Lake Tahoe Otter Attack, I was exploring among the rocks on the East Shore and found a cool rock tunnel.

I found this on my phone tonight and it totally gave me chills. This was so close to where the otter attack happened! Perhaps it’s PTSD, but I watch this video now and feel like an otter is going to pounce on me!

No more exploring rock caves and tunnels in Tahoe for me!

I resumed teaching in Incline Village this past week, and went to Lake Tahoe after lessons one day to see if I could find the location of my Lake Tahoe Otter Attack.

It was hard to tell for sure, as the vantage point from the East Lake Bike Path is very different from in the water.

It felt heavy to be back. It is a place I always considered my sanctuary, and now that beauty is tainted with some very troubling memories.

I think about how many follow the same route from Hidden Beach along the East Shore on kayaks and paddle boards - so many paddle boarders attach their life vests to their boards. And less than one mile from the location of the attack is Sand Harbor, where so many families with young children enjoy the water. I want to remind you that it is critical for people that are not strong swimmers to wear a Coast Guard certified life vest. I couldn’t have survived this attack without being a strong swimmer. Young children and people without strong water competency should always wear a life vest on open water!

If you think a bad day, or a bad otter, is going to stop me, you’ve got another thing coming! I am so excited to get back to teaching my students Infant Swimming Resource Self-Rescue lessons in two days!
