From towering block castles to magnetic tile masterpieces, open-ended construction play is one of the most powerful tools for childhood development! 🏰✨
When children build, they aren't just stacking pieces, they are engaging in complex problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and visual-motor planning. Every tower that wobbles teaches trial-and-error, while clicking pieces together or balancing blocks builds essential hand strength and fine motor precision. Plus, building together naturally creates opportunities to practice turn-taking, sharing, and communication skills in a fun, low-pressure way!
Whether it's cardboard boxes, wooden blocks, or inter-locking tiles, what is your little one's go-to building material at home? Tell us in the comments! 👇

Welcome to another tip Tuesday with Alma Behavior 🥳 This week we are talking all about transitions and routines!
Try making routines easier to navigate with visual checklists, keeping steps predictable, preparing things ahead of time, and giving your child time to figure out what comes next before jumping in with another reminder.
As the routine becomes more familiar, you may notice they naturally need less support.
The goal isn’t perfection, it’s helping routines feel more predictable, manageable, and eventually more independent.
Examples:
Morning routine: Instead of calling out “Get ready!” several times, use a simple checklist: bathroom →get dressed → breakfast → backpack → shoes.
Getting out the door: Keep shoes, backpacks, water bottles, and anything that needs to go to school in the same spot each day.
After school: Create a predictable sequence like backpack away → snack → 20-minute break → homework.
Homework: Rather than “Go do your homework,” break it into smaller steps: get folder → choose a workspace → get pencil → complete the first problem together. Let us know what topics you would like to discuss next ⬇️

Making music and building skills! 🎸🎶 Crafting DIY instruments like homemade guitars and xylophones is a creative way to target fine motor precision, sequencing, and sensory exploration. From plucking rubber-band strings to tapping out rhythm patterns, turning everyday items into musical tools makes learning engaging and fun. What’s your child’s favorite sound maker? 👇

Welcome to ! 💡 Stay tuned every other week for actionable tips and insights to help your little ones thrive. What topics would you like to see next? Let us know below!👇
Examples of visuals (but not limited to!)
- “I need a break” card nearby to help remind the learner to ask for a break if/when needed, as an alternative to verbal prompting!
- A picture of every step needed to get ready in the morning to increase independence with this routine. Or, every step of hand washing taped to the bathroom mirror.
- A calendar showing when a big event will happen or on which days of the week certain events will/regularly happen.
- A list of things to do that day / a schedule. This can also show learners that we can switch up the plan if needed. Or, if a change occurs, we can show what that change is.
- Written rules that can be referred to (also helpful for learners to be able to see rules/expectations as an additional/alternative option to adults verbally repeating rules or expectations to them each time)
- Signs! Such as putting a raining symbol on the door when it’s raining outside to refer to, should a learner request to go outside during bad weather. Also switching it to a sun when the weather improves and outside becomes available again!
- A sheet with various pictures of different coping strategy options to pick from, instead of a verbal list to remember. Also very helpful in more challenging moments where verbal interactions may feel more difficult for the learner.
