Lifting families is sort of our whole thing. Usually that looks like a mortgage someone was told they'd never qualify for. This week it looks like five hundred balloons over a Monday morning. We're glad to help with both. 🧡

What a morning. 🔑
Last week we cut the ribbon on Sombra del Oeste — 72 all-electric townhomes in Albuquerque's South Valley, and our second Homewise Homes® community in the city. Thank you to everyone who showed up to celebrate what's possible when a community builds together.
Our deepest thanks to the voices who joined us:
💬 Johanna Gilligan, President of Homewise
💬 Sarita Nair, Cabinet Secretary, NM Department of Workforce Solutions
💬 Cindy Chavez, Bernalillo County Manager
💬 Robyn Powell, Director of Policy and Planning, Housing New Mexico
💬 Jordan Franco, Business Banking Relationship Manager, U.S. Bank
💬 Estella Gamboa, Homewise homeowner — whose story reminded us all exactly why this work matters
And a huge thank you to BIG 98.5 for broadcasting live with us, Gilbert Uribe Music for filling the morning with sound, and the Street Food Institute for the incredible cooking demos. You made it feel like a celebration.
Sombra del Oeste is more than 72 homes. It's 72 families putting down roots. 🏡

Every state in the Southwest has passed housing reform legislation in recent years, except New Mexico.
That's one finding from a new policy brief our team co-authored with the Mercatus Center, based on 20+ interviews with builders, planners, land use attorneys, and elected officials across the state. New Mexico is short at least 58,000 homes, and a lot of what's holding them back isn't land or money - it's process.
This week Homewise President Johanna Gilligan and Senior Director of Policy & Advocacy Veronica Toledo took those findings to KRQE News 13.

Housing policy can feel like it happens somewhere far away, in committee rooms, in bill numbers, in legislative sessions most of us never see. But the decisions made there shape whether your kids can afford to stay in Santa Fe, whether your neighbor's rent goes up again, whether this community stays a place for all kinds of people.
Veronica Toledo, our Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy, explains why this one is worth your time.
On September 10th, four New Mexico lawmakers are coming to Santa Fe to talk honestly about the state's housing shortage and what the legislature can do.
