Growing up in the South and the Midwest we would experience tornadoes every spring and summer as well as intense thunderstorms. That kind of weather activity has always fascinated me and I often create paintings about those experiences. To me the tornado represents change in our lives, either positive or negative, change is a constant. “Threshold of the Tempest” is my latest painting embracing this subject and will be featured in my upcoming show “Sacred Land, Endless Sky” with Manitou Gallery in Santa Fe,NM. It started when he was four.

William Haskell’s parents recognized something special in their son when he was just four years old. By 11, he was painting in watercolor. As a teenager, he was already exploring the drybrush technique that would eventually become such an important part of his artistic language.

Decades later, this is still where it happens.

On October 2, Manitou Galleries opens Sacred Land, Endless Sky, a new solo exhibition that brings together everything collectors have long admired about William’s work while revealing something more: an artist continuing to evolve, experiment and push his work in a distinctly contemporary direction.

And there’s history here. William’s exhibitions with Manitou date back to 2003. More than two decades later, this new body of work feels both familiar and unexpected—rooted in the landscape that has defined his career, but bolder in composition, color and perspective.

I have always loved the vastness of the West, and I wanted this painting to convey that. The rugged sense of freedom and independence that one feels along with the bold, angular land formations that glow in the late afternoon light have always been a part of this idea. Reflecting on these thoughts helped me create the 36 x 48 “Spirit of the Open Range” which will be the signature piece for my upcoming exhibition “Sacred Land, Endless Sky”. The show will open on October 2nd 5-7pm at Manitou Gallery in Santa Fe, NM, I hope to see you at the show!

My work is based largely on places l’ve been and experiences that I’ve had often combining multiple experiences. Two of my favorite places are Taos New Mexico and Provence France which I have brought together to create my painting “Starry Night Western Light”, both places have a beauty that is uniquely their own and very inspirational. This painting will be featured in my upcoming exhibition “Sacred Land, Endless Sky” opening on October 2nd 5-7pm at Manitou Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. I have always been inspired and passionate about the desert, the geometric shapes, crisp light, and the plants and animals that survive and thrive there. One of my goals with my artwork is to continually introduce new subjects, and the Joshua Tree is one of them. I find their shapes and textural qualities ideal for what I am looking for in a subject and I truly enjoyed creating this painting. “Where the Coyotes Sing” will be featured in my upcoming show “Sacred Land, Endless Sky” at Manitou Gallery in Santa Fe, NM opening on October 2nd 5-7pm. “The Geometry of Faith” is an exploration of the abstraction that I see occurring in nature. One of my goals in creating this painting was to interconnect the earth and sky along with the historic chapel as a way to celebrate the amazing gifts from God that surround us everyday.
