THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WANTING TO WIN AND NEEDING TO WIN

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to win. In fact, I think you should want to win. You practice, you prepare, you travel to tournaments and you put yourself through the pressure of competition because you want to see what you can accomplish. Winning is part of what makes this game so much fun.

But there’s a big difference between wanting to win and needing to win.

When you want to win, you can still focus on the process. You can look at the table, make your decision and trust your routine. You can miss a ball and move on. You can fall behind and keep competing. You can recognize that losing this particular match doesn't change who you are or erase the work you've put into your game.

When you need to win, everything starts to feel heavier. The scoreboard becomes louder. A missed ball feels bigger. You start thinking about what the loss would mean instead of what you need to do on the current shot. You aren't just trying to win the match anymore. You're trying to prove something to yourself or someone else.

That's when pressure can start taking control of your game.

I've been there. I've had matches where I cared so much about the outcome that I made the match harder than it needed to be. And I've learned that the goal isn't to stop caring. It's to care about the right things.

Want the win. Prepare for the win. Fight for the win.

But don't make the win responsible for how you feel about yourself.

Because when you can walk into a match knowing that winning matters to you without believing that you need it, you give yourself a much better chance to actually play your game.

Wanting to win can motivate you. Needing to win can own you.

Learn the difference. Then step up to the table and give yourself permission to compete.
