Last time, we discovered the story and philosophy behind Chiyoji’s remarkable socks.
This time, we step inside the factory to see how they’re actually made.

How are the remarkable socks from our last episode made?
We stepped inside the factory to find out. ✨
Socks are among the most complex knitted products. 🧶
Every pair is carefully knitted—from the cuff and heel to the instep and the toe—using remarkably sophisticated machines.
At Chiyoji, vintage and modern machines work side by side, each carefully programmed for a different part of the process.
Some of the vintage machines are still programmed using cassette tapes. 📼✨
It’s a rare skill, preserved by Chiyoji’s factory manager, whose deep knowledge keeps these remarkable machines running. 👏
In the world of sock making, newer isn’t always better.
True craftsmanship comes from understanding the strengths of both tradition and innovation.
Through decades of skill and dedication, exceptional socks continue to be made. 🥰🧦

we travel to the Kakogawa area of Hyogo Prefecture to discover the craftsmanship behind its renowned sock-making tradition. 🧦🇯🇵

This time, we journey to the Harima region of Hyogo Prefecture.
Kakogawa City, Hyogo.
About an hour by train from Osaka, 🚃
nestled between Kobe, famous for Kobe beef, 🥩
and Himeji, home to Japan’s iconic castle. 🏯
Crossing the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea
and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge,
we arrive at our destination.
Harima has a long tradition of cotton cultivation and textile craftsmanship.
Harima is also home to Banshu-ori, one of Japan’s renowned textile traditions. 🧵🧶
In 1886, sock production began in Kakogawa. 🧦
Passed down through generations, local craftsmanship helped Kakogawa grow into one of Japan’s three major sock-producing regions. ✨

Craving a hojicha latte that never waters down? We’ve got you. This super simple ice cube recipe will change your game for the better!
INGREDIENTS:
1 tbsp Japanese hojicha
1 tbsp sweetened condensed milk
1.5 cup water
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Sift the hojicha into a mug or small bowl to get rid of any lumps.
2. Add hot water and whisk vigorously with a bamboo whisk in an “M” or zigzag motion until a smooth, frothy layer forms.
*water quantity is not listed in ingredient as you can adjust it to your preference for a more or less full-bodied taste.
3. Add the sweetened condensed milk and the water.
4. Pour the matcha into ice cube trays and freeze.
5. Put the ice cubes into a glass and pour milk (your choice!) on top.
Share this with a friend who has never tried Japanese hojicha.

Diluted matcha? Never again! Here’s an easy way to keep your Japanese matcha nice and flavorful until the very last drop.
INGREDIENTS: ◯ 1 tbsp Japanese matcha ◯ 1 tbsp sweetened condensed milk ◯ 1.5 cup water
◯ INSTRUCTIONS
1. Sift the matcha powder into a bowl to remove any clumps.
2. Add a small amount of hot water and whisk vigorously in a ”M” or zigzag motion until smooth and frothy.
*water quantity is not listed in ingredient as you can adjust it to your preference for a more or less full-bodied taste.
3. Add 1.5 cup water and 1 tbsp sweetened condensed milk.
4. Pour the sweetened matcha into ice cube trays and freeze solid.
5. Add the matcha cubes to a glass and pour your favorite milk over the top.
