BLISTERED, a new report from International Monitor Formosa Plastics Alliance, traces PVC plastic blister packaging on The Home Depot shelves to toxic pollution, cancer risk, and the suffering of contaminated communities from Texas to Louisiana.

The report looks at the supply chain behind PVC packaging at The Home Depot, connecting packaging on store shelves to chemicals produced by Formosa Plastics in Gulf Coast communities already burdened by industrial pollution.

Home Depot has already phased out PVC from its own-brand packaging. To protect communities like those of San Antonio Bay Estuarine Waterkeeper, Home Depot must commit to removing PVC from all packaging on its shelves.

Methylene chloride is a highly toxic chemical that can cause cancer, serious illness, and death.

Now a federal appeals court has overturned critical U.S. Environmental Protection Agency protections that restricted most uses of methylene chloride, putting workers and consumers in danger.

That’s roughly the weight of 1,000 school buses. And it represents the amount of toxic PVC used in packaging in Washington state each year. PVC is among the most toxic plastics used today, and virtually none of it is recycled.

Washington Department of Ecology has the opportunity to protect health and ban PVC and PVDC in packaging under the state’s groundbreaking Safer Products for Washington law. Instead, it is proposing to delay action for five years. In that time, more than 100 million pounds of toxic plastic will continue to enter the waste stream!

Safer alternatives already exist. Washington can—and should—move forward now.
