Kraken around the country

A journey begins…. it was December 2021 when Mom announced she was moving to Seattle from Sedona. We live in Des Moines, Washington, an aging community full of assisted living we’d struggle to afford. In addition the housing market was as hot as it had ever been with prices simply out of our reach. Our options were limited. After a deep dive on everything from shipping containers to tiny homes, we decided on an 800 square-foot ADU (additional dwelling unit) or more specifically a DADU (detached…). An elegant solution to a family need situated in our front yard (setbacks, ugh). It was an effective, albeit odd, use of space rarely used. Next up—permitting and navigating city management!

In December ’21 my mom, Dona, announced she was moving to Seattle from Sedona to be near us during her twilight years. Times were tough as Covid lingered stubbornly. Housing was scarce and expensive, and while Des Moines is full of assisted living facilities, it was a tradition in our family to age in place. In this instance that place was quickly becoming our home. We needed a solution.

By the spring of ’22 we were permitted and under construction. We had opted to build additional living space on our extra property. Our plans were for an 800 square foot ADU—additional dwelling unit—adjacent to, yet separate from, our home. Far enough for privacy yet close enough for aging in place. Alan Price, our site planner, sales manager, and my husband and partner, lead the process from permitting to landscaping. It gave Mom the retirement home of her dreams at an affordable price, without the headaches.

Mom moved into the ADU—her casita—in February ’23. Tragically, a previous cancer returned, and she passed in May of the same year.
