You do not have to wear beige on beige to dress modestly chic.

I started with brand-new Rachel Zoe cotton tunics and transformed them into these full-length festival dresses by adding layers of reclaimed cotton and rayon in florals, stripes, and unapologetically joyful color.

The pattern mixing is unconventional. That is the point.

Modest fashion can be expressive, artistic, colorful, and completely your own.

Taylor chose one and needed extra length, so I customized it for her before she left the studio. Right now, when you purchase this dress, I will lengthen or shorten it for you at no additional charge.

Because the clothes should work for the woman—not the other way around.

I’ve been upcycling clothing for almost 30 years.

My mom taught me how to sew when I was eight years old.

Back then, it was just something we did together. I had no idea that one skill would shape my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

When I became Muslim in 1999, I started searching for clothing that felt modest—but also felt like me. I wasn’t looking to adopt someone else’s culture. I was trying to honor my faith while staying true to my own identity.

So I started sewing.

Sometimes I made garments from scratch.

Sometimes I wandered through thrift stores looking for pieces with good bones and a second story waiting to be told.

This outfit is one of those stories.

The jeans are Madewell.

The lightweight denim shirt began life as a men’s button-up.

Both came from Evergreen Goodwill

I transformed them using hand-dyed African indigo cloth—one of my favorite textiles—giving them a completely new life.

Back then, nobody called it “upcycling.”

I was just making beautiful things from what already existed.

Looking back, I realize that Threads of Renewal didn’t begin with an event.

It began with a little girl learning to sew beside her mom.
