The Solstice Trees at the former Harvey Funeral Home site on N 36th Street are coming down. Seattle Department of Transportation upheld its removal decision on Sept. 11 after a two-month Director's Review prompted by a challenge from Tree Action Seattle and public comments from neighbors. The six trees include three red maples, two incense cedars, and one ash. SDOT said the trees were unlikely to survive construction. Fourteen replacement trees are planned.

Construction started recently on a new westbound bus stop on North 36th Street near the 7-Eleven. Expect sidewalk closures and parking restrictions for about two weeks.

That's one of several remaining Route 40 to-do items in Fremont this fall. Seattle Department of Transportation also plans to remove the dedicated left-turn lane on northbound Fremont Avenue North at North 36th Street to make room for more parking and bike travel.

Lenin’s Latest Look: Mother Nature, with Jimothy on her shoulder

This is far from Lenin’s first costume change. Fremont’s Lenin has suited up for World Cup watch parties and donned Snowman and Jack O’Lenin heads for the holidays. Credit where it’s due: talented Fremont Arts Council members. Catch more of their handiwork next Saturday at Luminata, the Council’s lantern procession around Green Lake.

Neighbors tipped us off that Accidental Park – up the stairs off North 43rd Street, between Palatine and Greenwood Avenues North – was exactly the kind of spot that needed a newsstand. We agreed. There’s one there now, perfectly positioned for sunset views and neighborhood meetups.

An alley in lower Fremont has quickly become one of the neighborhood's newest attractions: a sprawling mural of global sensation Jimothy the raccoon.

Flyers hung on nearby utility poles now point visitors toward it with the familiar Fremont mantra: “Stay Weird.”

The project’s creator, Kelsey Hoffman, said the art didn’t start as a beautification effort. It started as an attempt to keep people from getting hurt.

Seattle’s Community Crisis Responders expanded their hours last month, adding early-morning and late-night coverage citywide.

CCRs, the unarmed behavioral health teams dispatched through 911, now operate 6:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily. This is up from the previous noon-to-10-p.m. window, according to the Seattle CARE Department.

The department says the change was prompted by call data showing about 84% of CCRs’ most common calls come in during that expanded window.

Fremont falls within the Seattle Police Department’s North Precinct, where CCR activity has grown fastest.
