Post Falls Police Department just announced that they are actively participating in ICE’s 287(g) program, which gives specially trained local officers authority to enforce certain federal immigration laws under ICE supervision.

According to the department’s own September 10 media release, Post Falls officers worked alongside ICE during patrol operations from August 24 through August 28. Thirteen people were arrested for alleged immigration violations during those operations, followed by two additional arrests. That makes 15 immigration arrests since Post Falls joined the program about two months ago.

And this is important: the release describes these as immigration violations. It does not say all 15 people were arrested for violent crimes or serious criminal offenses.

This is what happens when the line between local policing and federal immigration enforcement starts disappearing.

For those of us in Spokane and North Idaho, this isn’t something happening hundreds of miles away. It’s happening in our own backyard.
