💻 Dev Update 💻
Earliest stages of playtesting have begun!
The past two weeks were focused on one goal: getting a real, installable build into testers' hands and keeping it running. 158 commits landed, the version moved from 0.2.0 to 0.3.10 across roughly ten releases, and the first playtest is now actively underway, with tester-reported bugs already being filed and fixed in real time.
The biggest pieces: a full automated release pipeline that turns a version bump into a Steam update with no one touching a build machine by hand, a complete operator console and live server monitoring system so the team can watch the world's health and manage it without stopping the game, and a significant hardening pass to make the build actually launch cleanly on Windows, Mac, and Linux on real, varied hardware. Players on all three platforms get a properly signed build that doesn't trip "unidentified developer" warnings.
On the world side, NPC relationships now cool at a more realistic pace, the intent parser handles normal punctuation without stumbling, and Buyan, the second location beyond Bukenstrand, is taking visible shape with foliage and buildings that actually get out of the camera's way. The world has ambient sound from the moment you arrive now too, which sounds small and is not.

💻 Dev Update 💻
The Boring Stuff, Built Early
Three pieces of infrastructure landed this sprint. None of it is something you'll ever directly touch, but it's what makes Grimmloch run reliably for years rather than just ship once.
We built an admin and live-ops console for operating the live server: start, stop, restart, kick players, broadcast, put the world into maintenance mode, monitor what the AI did and why. A vitals dashboard that tracks server health in real time, sampling every two seconds so we can look back at any moment and see exactly what happened. And automated builds for Windows, Mac, and Linux, including proper Mac code-signing so your machine doesn't throw up a scary "unidentified developer" warning.
Small teams usually build this kind of thing later, after the duct tape starts failing. We built it now, because running a world for years is a different job than shipping a game once.

💻 Dev Update! 💻
The past three weeks were one of the most concentrated sprints yet, running three big tracks at once.
The automated build pipeline hit its first major milestone; we can now produce release-quality builds on dedicated hardware instead of relying on one developer's machine, which is exactly what makes reliable Steam updates possible down the line. Steam playtest infrastructure also landed, and we're closing in on our first real shakedown test: a small group installing through Steam and walking through character creation for the first time on real hardware.
Speaking of character creation, it got a ground-up redesign. The natal chart now runs a genuine astrological engine tied to your character's actual birth time and region, producing a voiced reading for both the waking world and its dreaming-world counterpart. We also launched a new Design Studio section on the website where you can read about the philosophy and systems behind Grimmloch.
Lots of invisible infrastructure work this update, but it's exactly the kind that makes everything else possible.

💻 Dev Update 💻 | Week ending June 10
The Grimmloch team has been busy on multiple fronts this week. The website got some significant upgrades: the trailer now plays front and center when you land on the homepage, faction cards link directly to their sourcebook pages, and a brand new Meet the Team page tells the story of the people behind the project. The world map got a full overhaul with new Valdara artwork, light and dark theme variants, and richer regional detail. Behind the scenes, the team also welcomed a new collaborator working on the build infrastructure that will make reliable, repeatable updates possible after launch.
On the game side, the team continued their careful NPC verification work, putting ten more Bukenstrand villagers through quality audits covering voice, appearance, and personality consistency. Every character who passes that process is one more resident of the world who'll feel genuinely alive when you meet them; not a template, but a person with their own way of speaking and being. The work is unglamorous but it's exactly what makes the difference between a village you pass through and one you remember.

Grimmloch Playtest Applications Are Now Open!
After years of building, we’re ready to start putting Grimmloch into real players’ hands — and we’d love for you to be one of them.
Grimmloch is a multi-player roleplay simulation built for people who take roleplay seriously, and the playtest runs from around the Fourth of July weekend through the end of the year. We’re looking for testers across every kind of involvement, from those who want to help us wrestle with the earliest, roughest builds to those who’d rather step in once things are stable and simply tell us what they think. Everyone who wants to help is welcome.
To apply, join us in the Opulent Code Discord ( https://discord.gg/UnyWhJjx8b ) and head to the how-to-join channel. You’ll find everything you need there: what the playtest is, what to expect, the questions we’ll ask, and how we sort testers so that the process respects your time and your strengths. When you’re ready, a button at the bottom of that channel opens your application.
We can’t wait to build this with you

Tired of games deciding who and what your character can be?
Sick of the walls that stop you from changing sides, or exploring things the game creators didn't plan for?
In Grimmloch, if you can imagine it, you can play it.
Does your goblin dream of being a valiant knight in (slightly slimy) armor?
Does your innocent elven maid secretly wish to become a mad necromancer?
The game doesn't decide your story. Your choices at character creation don't decide what you can and can't do.
YOU decide, with every choice you make.
Cross the Sea of Dreams, pass through the Gates of Horn and Ivory, and take control of your story, wherever it leads.

💻 Dev Update 💻 | Week ending June 3
Most of this past week was focused on our NPC systems: tackling conversation behavior that felt more "chat loop" than "people going about their lives," and working on making sure each character sounds distinctly like themselves rather than generic fantasy-speak. Early results on both fronts are promising. Plus, of course, the usual crash fixes and cleanup that keeps the whole thing from turning into a pile of spaghetti.
