We have a BIG vet day coming up.

🐾 Nova will be spayed on October 22nd
🐾 Piccolo will be neutered on October 22nd

Between the two of them, we are looking at approximately a $1,000 DAY at the vet. 😳

And while we prepare for that bill, the everyday needs of rescue don’t stop.

🧽 Cleaner & disinfectant

With a house full of huskies, you can probably imagine how quickly all of those things disappear! 😂 Especially the cleaner. Huskies certainly aren't known for keeping the housekeeping staff bored!

🐾❤️ How about an Anya update?! ❤️🐾

Our sweet Ms. Anya left for her furever home on Sunday, and so far, things have gone pretty well!

She has already made friends with her new brother, a male husky. 🐺❤️ She has a comfy dog bed in the living room where she sleeps, but apparently Anya has also decided that the leather chair is much more fitting for a queen like herself! 👑😂

After everything this girl has been through, seeing her settle into a home of her very own makes our hearts so happy. She has people to love her, a husky brother to keep her company, a soft place to sleep...and, of course, her throne. 😂❤️

Keep being the good girl we always knew you were, Anya. We miss that beautiful face, but this is exactly why we do what we do. 🐾

🐾 Ms. Nova’s Vet Update 🐾

Today was Ms. Nova’s turn for a trip to the vet! She went in for a well check, vaccines, heartworm testing, and lab work.

Let me tell you, this girl was an absolute DREAM patient! ❤️

Nova is such a laid-back, calm girl. She never flinched once when the needles went in. She never tried to pull away during all the pushing, prodding, or teeth inspecting. She acted like this was just another normal day!

Then she decided to show off. 😂 The vet started giving her commands, and Nova was ready to demonstrate ALL of her talents!

She was basically looking at her like, “Next? And now give me the treat...please!” 😂🐾

Nova weighed in at 43 pounds. She is a smaller husky and isn't very tall either. The shelter estimated her to be around 7 years old, but our vet believes she is closer to 5-6 years old.

Now for the difficult part of today's update.

Nova tested NEGATIVE for heartworm, which we are very thankful for. ❤️ Unfortunately, she tested POSITIVE for Lyme disease.

She was prescribed a 28-day course of doxycycline, two pills once a day with food, and she started her first dose with dinner tonight. So now we begin getting that taken care of.

We also have a date for her spay!

And guess who else is going that day? Piccolo! He will be getting neutered the same day.

Originally, they told us the earliest they could get Nova in was NOVEMBER 10TH!

NOVEMBER 10TH?! 😳

Because they know we're a rescue, and they know we cannot take another husky into the rescue until we get three of our current dogs adopted, they worked some magic and squeezed Nova in with Piccolo on October 22nd. We are incredibly grateful. ❤️

That also means October 22nd is shaping up to be approximately a $1,000 VET DAY for Buckeye Husky Rescue and Rehome. 😬

So...consider this your fair warning. 😂

We have a couple of really nice items being donated that we will either auction or raffle off, including a Longaberger basket! We will start sharing more information about those this weekend.

For tonight, we're just happy to have Nova back home, dinner in her belly, her first dose of medication on board, and another important step in her rescue journey behind her. ❤️

Now somebody give that girl the treat she so clearly earned! 🐾😂

Yesterday was a VERY long day! 🥱

My workday started at 3:30 a.m. and didn't end until 7:30 p.m., with Piccolo’s (formerly Oh Gee) vet appointment squeezed in between. By the time I finally parked it for the day, there wasn't much left of Rescue Momma! 😂

But we have an update on our little guy. ❤️

Piccolo’s vet appointment went well! He had a complete wellness check, and thankfully, the vet found nothing concerning. He also received his Lepto vaccine.

Since Piccolo is only a little over 5 months old, we decided to wait until October 23rd to have him neutered, when he will be 6 months old. Personally, I prefer waiting until closer to a year, but unfortunately, in rescue that isn't always possible.

Now for the part that absolutely broke my heart yesterday. 💔

Seeing Piccolo’s behavior from the moment we left the house until the moment we returned home made me wonder once again what this little puppy experienced before coming to us.

He was absolutely terrified.

Piccolo wouldn't even attempt to walk on a leash. During the ride, I think he would have crawled right into my lap if I had allowed him. Instead, he pressed himself against me, trying to stay as close as possible.

At the vet, whenever another dog came into the waiting room, I had to turn Piccolo toward my chest, hold him close, and keep him from seeing them. If he saw another dog, he would shake and growl.

Growl.

This little guy, who has barely made a sound since arriving here, suddenly had a voice. Not because he wanted to be mean. He was scared.

Piccolo is just over 5 months old.

Whatever happened during those first few months of his life left him with fears that a puppy this young shouldn't already carry. We may never know his entire story, but yesterday made it painfully clear that there are parts of his past we haven't seen yet.

And then we came home.

The moment Piccolo was back inside the rescue with the pack he knows and trusts, his tail started wagging again. ❤️🐾

Home is his safe place.

And THAT gives me hope.

There was another piece of wonderful news yesterday, too. Our little guy has gained 5 pounds since arriving at the rescue! Piccolo now weighs 20.02 pounds! 🎉

So we will keep doing what we have been doing. We will give him time. We will introduce him to new experiences slowly. We will show him that a leash doesn't have to be scary, other dogs aren't automatically a threat, car rides can lead to good things, and the people around him can be trusted.

He doesn't have to figure out the whole world today.

He's safe now. He has time. ❤️
