Landon locked the 18 into 2k to win Open A main event with a strong and exciting showing on friday night. We caught a bit of fortune after a heads up move by Landon avoiding a huge pile up coming to the checks.. P-2 result. 18 took the P-5 Starting spot after dice roll.
From the drop of the green in the Open A main the attitude of the 18 immediately looked way off... Super RR tight and just absolutely hard to watch and drive.. This was a definite head scratcher as first 20 laps of the main event dwindled. The 18 had been easier than a brisket in a pellet smoker, nearly spot on all weekend. At the onset of the halfway break Jax and I crawled all over the kart trying to find the source of the handling issues, made it around to the left front and found the spindle buried all the way to the knuckle. Now while the rf was spot on the LF was not. Suddenly it appeared as if a big ole plate of fishsticks had been cookin around our pit area.. Mighty strange.... Hard to say for certian but best & most hopeful guess was that the height adj was missed after our pre race front end checks due to Landon stopping just shy the task being complete to attend the dice roll. Although Landon adamantly put it on the big man that he set it correctly 110% for certain for 2 days straight...Crew chief didnt catch it either until it was too late.. Water under the bridge at this point. Although this proved to be the start of a fatal race ending error. While taking the gamble Kingpin was bent from early race contact and did not want to budge. Instead of leaving it, the gamble was made to try and adjust to get the Lf back into a normal position. Ultimately the kingpin was forced up to the point of practically pinning the left front spindle & knuckle causing the steering to stick in a unpredictable way leaving Landon no choice but to pull off of the track giving up his position for the final 20 Laps, going DNF P-13. This was a definite pi**er ( to keep it PG ) & very bitter pill to swallow. What a way to end what otherwise was a super strong weekend for the 18 machine.
Flyin 9- Jaxon started the weekend by making a few early errors on the slick track & going to the back. The 9 went into full risk mode going straight tuhb ripping the lip like a mad man, going 2 wide outside spooling up the KKR powerplant and making hay for the pass which came to a quick end as the 9 was stuffed in the fence with a nice Rr. . Hard lick, broke spindle axle Dnf...The rest of the weekend consisted of quite a few selfspins one from P-3 in closing laps, then down hill from there with another near wall flip, then off the berm near flip. Jaxon fought back from adversity in the crunch time Saturday, drove his lil ass off and barely locked into the A main. Jax Piloted a fast kart from the tail of the field on up to 7th on a single groove race track which required a ton of patience and discipline, Something this Lil gasser doesnt keep in stock. For years now 81 has always been a thorn for the 9 to get ahold of. So to close out the weekend moving fowards was a win in itself with some good notes to come home with.
Big thanks to the 81 crew, all the folks that put up the purse, and competitors alike that make the event what it was. Bout as close to Shawnee vibes you can get outdoors. Tough track, different each night & stout competition boot!
Shout out to Bill and crew at Excalibur Racing Chassis for helping us stay primed and running up-front! If you havent already, stop by the fb & page and give them a like and sub and check out the website at www.excaliburracingchassis.com for more info on getting setup with some bad fast tubes.
Final thoughts on the weekend. There is no time wasted in preparation, but even the best preparation can be wasted without ex*****on when it counts. We faced outside adversity forsure this weekend but more over, we beat ourselves which is unacceptable and becoming too damn common. We will unpack, assess and regroup. Until the next one✌️
