More than 25 years after Mark Sandman died onstage, Morphine is set to release one more album. Cocoon, an eight-song collection assembled from the Boston trio’s long-shelved late-’90s recordings, brings Sandman’s unmistakable voice and two-string bass back into the present — and gives the band’s unfinished final chapter an unexpected new form. It’s due Dec. 4 from Partisan.

Sandman suffered a fatal heart attack while performing with Morphine in Italy in 1999, bringing an abrupt end to one of the more singular careers to emerge from the ’90s alternative underground. At a time when grunge dominated the culture, Morphine sounded like nobody else: Sandman’s slide bass, Dana Colley’s baritone and tenor saxophones and stripped-down drums created the smoky, jazz- and blues-inflected sound the band dubbed “low rock.”

The sessions that became Cocoon date to late 1998 and 1999, when Sandman and producers Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade were working at Sandman’s home studio in Cambridge, Ma. The songs pointed toward a different future for Morphine, incorporating piano and acoustic guitars alongside the band’s familiar bass, sax and drums. But amid pressure from DreamWorks and growing friction with Kolderie, Sandman shelved the material and instead self-produced the songs that would become 2000’s The Night, the band’s posthumous final album.

The original Cocoon tapes then sat untouched for more than two decades. In 2023, Sandman’s life partner and Morphine estate manager Sabine Hrechdakian began working with Kolderie to digitize the recordings for archival purposes. Listening back, they discovered something considerably more substantial than demos or outtakes. “I was astounded by the sound of the tracks when I put them up at the studio where we transferred them,” Kolderie says. “It really felt so right to be bringing them back from the crypt into the world again.”

Colley initially hesitated to revisit the sessions, but eventually returned to the material, recording new saxophone parts with Kolderie in early 2026. Some Morphine devotees may recognize alternate versions from unofficial releases or the 2004 Sandbox compilation, but Cocoon presents them as a unified album. The title track captures the record’s intimate, otherworldly quality, with Sandman singing of a “plush-lined, custom designed” cocoon. Hrechdakian says the song reflects Sandman’s love of returning home after touring, while also carrying the album’s recurring fascination with space travel. Elsewhere, “Wig” brings a playful, danceable side of Morphine to the surface, while “Pretty Face” closes the album on a more vulnerable note.

And then there are the sounds between the songs: Sandman laughing at the end of a take, fingers moving across an acoustic guitar, Slade’s voice drifting through the studio. They’re the kinds of details that make Cocoon feel less like a momentary reopening of a room that has been closed for decades. The album’s cover deepens that sense of intimacy. It features a photograph Sandman took of Hrechdakian’s reflection in a train window traveling to Antwerp in 1998, paired on the reverse with an image of Sandman photographing himself in a mirror at home.
