No mayor. No city hall. No official town government.

For more than 200 years, Lemay’s neighbors simply built what their community needed — a road, a fire department, a parish, a ballfield, and so much more.

From a ferry crossing named for a troublesome ferryman to Jefferson Barracks, German immigrant farmers, volunteer firefighters, and a hometown major-league pitcher who built a baseball field for local kids…

Lemay’s history is really a story about **neighbors taking care of neighbors.**

What if a Missouri farm was also a factory, gristmill, blacksmith shop, dairy, sawmill, school and church?

That’s exactly what existed at Watkins Woolen Mill near Lawson, Missouri.

In the 1800s, the Watkins family built an entire local economy around their farm—including a woolen mill that employed about 40 people and processed tens of thousands of pounds of wool each year.

Even more remarkably, the original mill and machinery survived.
