A Professor of Psychology at Rutgers University, Co-Director of the Academy for SEL, and Director of the Rutgers Social-Emotional Learning Lab, Dr. Elias has spent decades helping educators understand the skills students need to succeed in school and in life.
In his Legacy Series contribution, Dr. Elias reflects on the evolution of social-emotional learning and why skills like listening, self-regulation, and emotional awareness have always been essential to student success.

🌞 What happens when educators experience service-learning first? 💛

At 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱, staff intentionally participated in a service-learning experience during Professional Development Day, assembling 100 "Sunshine Bags" and writing encouraging notes for residents of a local senior living community. By experiencing service, reflection, and discussion themselves, educators were better prepared to facilitate meaningful service-learning experiences for their students.

👏 Congratulations to 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗱 for bringing 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝟱 to life and demonstrating that when adults experience service-learning, they inspire students to make a difference. ☀️

🎭✨ 𝗔𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗻𝘆𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹, every Thursday begins with a celebration of student talent! 👏

𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙏𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙙𝙖𝘆 brings the entire school community together each week for student-led performances featuring singing, dancing, poetry, and other creative expressions. From Preschool through Grade 12, every student has opportunities to participate, lead, and shine. 🌟

By creating regular opportunities for students to encourage one another and celebrate their unique talents, this practice helps build confidence, strengthen relationships, and foster a strong sense of belonging throughout the school community. 💛

✨ At 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹, students are learning that conflict and mistakes can be powerful opportunities for growth. Through the school’s unique “𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵” students use a structured, restorative process to reflect on their actions, take responsibility, and work toward repairing relationships.💛

Grounded in the school's core values of self-discipline, courage, integrity, respect, compassion, gratitude, and humility, this innovative approach helps students develop the skills and mindset needed to navigate challenges with character and confidence. 🌟
