Small Business Spotlight:

Cozy Drinks and Second Chances: Inside Sun Prairie’s The Cats Brew

For years, Heather Wipijewski and Liz Brey shared an office while working as emergency veterinary technicians. During quiet moments between busy shifts, they would daydream about opening a cozy cat cafe. What started as a lighthearted joke over their regular Sunday morning coffees eventually became reality when they opened The Cats Brew in Sun Prairie in September 2024.

Both owners bring over 30 years of veterinary experience to the space, creating a thoughtful environment that benefits both the local community and rescue cats in need. Partnering with Little Orphan’s Animal Rescue, a smaller rescue in Montello, Wisconsin, The Cats Brew offers adoptable cats a home-like lounge to socialize while patrons enjoy craft beverages.

Watching timid cats blossom is one of Heather and Liz's favorite parts of running the business. Take Ruthie, a four-year-old cat who was rescued as a feral kitten and spent years overlooked. "For us, it took about a month for her to start allowing us to pet her," the owners recall. "It took two and a half months for her to fully come out of her shell... and now she is in a loving home!"

Visiting the cat lounge costs $10 per person for an hour. Because the team caps visits at eight people at a time to keep stress low for the cats, reservations made through their website are strongly recommended to guarantee a spot. Walk-ins are taken only when space permits. Note that while the cafe is open Tuesday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the cat lounge hours are slightly shorter, closing an hour earlier each day.

You do not have to enter the cat lounge to enjoy the space, though. The cafe area and cat room run on completely separate HVAC systems, making it safe and comfortable for people with cat allergies to pop in for a treat. Large windows allow cafe guests to watch the kitties while sipping on a drink. Beyond specialty coffees made with local Rusty Dog roasts, the menu features teas, smoothies, refreshers, hot chocolate, and bakery items from local spots like Crumb en Croute.

Whether you are looking to adopt, want to join a cat-friendly yoga or painting event, or simply need a quiet spot for a smoothie, Heather and Liz welcome you to stop by.
