🌱 TLL TURF TIP TUESDAY: When should you stop mowing Bermuda?

As fall temperatures settle in, we get closer to the end of Bermuda mowing season, but don’t park the mower just because the calendar says fall!

Keep mowing your Bermuda at its normal maintained height as long as it is actively growing. As nighttime temperatures consistently cool and growth slows, you’ll notice you’re mowing less and less frequently.

A few things to remember:

• Continue mowing while the grass is actively growing.
• Avoid letting Bermuda get extra tall before winter. It doesn’t need “extra protection” from longer grass.
• As growth slows, simply increase the time between cuts.
• Once Bermuda goes dormant and stops growing, regular mowing is finished for the season.
• Keep leaves and debris off the lawn through fall and winter to allow sunlight and airflow to reach the turf.

One more thing: fall is NOT the time to scalp Bermuda. Save aggressive lowering of the mowing height for spring green-up.

The calendar is a guide. Your turf and the weather will tell you when mowing season is really over. 🌱

Fall is one of the best opportunities to build healthier soil and stronger turf going into next year.

Tulsa Lawn Leveling - flat out, the best.

We shared a few pictures yesterday from Marc’s day at OSU’s Turf & Landscape Field Day, but there was way too much good information not to share a few more!

One of the biggest takeaways was just how many factors go into turf performance beyond what we see on the surface. We learned more about soil health and variability, including how construction history and even water sources can impact soil and turf over time.

We also got an up-close look at several of OSU’s National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) trials, including Bermudagrass, Kentucky bluegrass, and Tall Fescue.

The Bermudagrass research was especially interesting to us. In addition to drought tolerance, researchers are evaluating winter survival among different varieties. High Point was one that really caught our attention and left us wanting to learn more.

And something we don’t see every day... Zoysia on a putting green! Definitely one of the cooler things to see in person.

A lot of great information packed into one day and plenty for us to keep learning about and following as the research continues. 🌱

TLL Turf Tip Tuesday: Don’t forget about what’s underneath your lawn.

Fall is a great time to improve the soil your grass is growing in. Topdressing with quality material can help add organic matter, improve soil structure and create a better growing environment for your turf.

Pair it with core aeration and you’re giving that material an opportunity to work its way into the soil instead of simply sitting on top.

For cool-season lawns, fall is also prime growing season, making it a great time to aerate, topdress and overseed when needed.

A better lawn starts from the ground up.

Why aerate your lawn this fall?

Over time, soil can become compacted from foot traffic, mowing, equipment, kids, pets and everyday use. Compacted soil makes it harder for water, air and nutrients to reach the root zone.

Core aeration helps by removing small plugs of soil throughout the lawn, creating openings that allow:

• Better movement of water and air into the soil
• Improved nutrient availability
• Reduced soil compaction
• Better conditions for root development

And if you're going to aerate, it's a great time to pair it with our topdressing service.

Applying topdressing after aeration allows material to work into those newly created openings, helping improve the soil where your turf needs it most.

For fescue lawns, add overseeding to the combination and you're creating better conditions for seed-to-soil contact and new growth heading into the cooler months.
