Helpless Hounds
Helpless Hounds is a Tulsa, OK based 501(c)(3) non profit breed-specific rescue for scent hounds.
Helpless Hounds is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, no-kill, breed-specific hound dog rescue organization in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We are dedicated to helping hounds who are left homeless for whatever reason โ in public shelters where they are at high risk of euthanasia due to pet overpopulation, hounds given up by their owners because of difficult circumstances, and those in danger of abuse or neglect. We place our hounds in loving, responsible, committed permanent homes, following a comprehensive adoption process which includes taking considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a hound dog into their homes and lives. Hounds in our care are spayed or neutered, receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment, and placed in nurturing foster homes while they await placement in their permanent homes. We assist hound dogs in distress without regard to age, or ease of placement. To the extent our finances allow, hounds in the greatest need take priority. We are determined to keep administrative expenses extremely low so that virtually every dollar taken in goes directly to the care of the animals. Our group remains interested in and committed to the welfare of the hound dog beyond the adoption process. Finally, we strive to work with area shelters and other rescue organizations to develop a network of supporters and volunteers in order to create a better world for homeless hounds.

Remember Chet?
A few weeks ago he was an emaciated stray on a back road in southern Missouri. Now heโs doing laps around his fosterโs yard, sporting a new collar, and sleeping off what was clearly a very long year.
Chet started out a little shy, but heโs figuring out that people can be pretty great. Heโs gentle with everyone, gets along with other dogs, and couldnโt care less about cats. Heโd especially love a home with a dog closer to his size to show him the ropes.
Got a sunny spot for a morning nap and a dog whoโs been wanting a buddy? Chet will take it from there.

Ella's pictures are cute, but we need you to understand that she's even cuter in real life.
The freckles are better in person. The eyes are better in person. The ears flop in a way a photo can't fully capture.
The application takes about ten minutes. After that you're the one with the dog everyone swoons over the second they see her.

Where's Riley going this weekend? Right now he has nowhere, and we'd like to fix that.
Riley spends his weekdays at a business that has fostered over 100 hounds for us, and they say he's the easiest dog they've ever had.
Weekends are where we need you.
He needs somewhere to go every single weekend, Friday afternoon to Monday morning, and it does not have to be the same foster each time. Take one weekend, take every fourth weekend, trade off with a friend.
We just need his weekends covered.
He's easygoing, sweet, and great with every person and dog he's met. He's also in heartworm treatment, so he needs to stay local to the Tulsa, OK metro area until it's done.
If you're local and can take him for even one weekend, message us with any questions you have or go ahead and fill out the foster application!

Wh***ey's story reached thousands of people. A five year mystery, a trap in the woods, a founder on the floor of our office. You read it, you shared it, you donated, and we are so grateful.
But the applications? Zero. Not one. No inquiries, no leads on a home for this guy.
Wh***ey is a big, gorgeous bloodhound who survived years on his own, got caught, got scanned, and turned out to have a rescue that never stopped looking for him. He is working through his heartworm treatment like a champ. He is exactly the kind of dog people say they want.
So what gives?
If you've been waiting for a sign, this is it. Wh***ey is waiting on the family he was promised half a decade ago, and we'd love for you to be it. Apply, share, or tag the one friend who has been saying they want a bloodhound.

Skipper showed up in a pasture in rural Oklahoma, and decided that was now his pasture. Nobody asked him to leave, and he has not asked for much since.
He's a bluetick coonhound, around 2 years old, 55 pounds, and calm in a way that suggests he's seen things and chose not to get worked up about any of them. Other dogs? Fine. Kids? Also fine. Strangers? Fine, but he needs a minute. He's not being rude, he's just doing his due diligence before he decides you're okay. He's never met a cat, so we can't speak for how that goes.
What we can say is that he's sweet, he's easy, and he's very good at being a dog. Hounds don't usually come this chill- take him home before he changes his mind.

The last few days have been brutal, but Sugar has finally turned a corner ๐
She's not out of the woods just yet, but here's what's been going on since Sunday:
Sunday 10/4
Sugar took a bad turn. Her breathing got fast and hard, and she couldn't tolerate her oxygen tube, so Woodland West's own staff rushed her to an emergency hospital with a special oxygen kennel. We didn't know if she'd make it, and we were terrified.
Monday 10/5
Her vet gave us the first hopeful news. Her breathing rate had come down a bit, and the vet was able to turn her oxygen support down from 40% to 30%. She handled time outside the kennel and bathroom breaks okay. She still had a lot of nasal discharge and a low-grade fever, and because a week of antibiotics hadn't gotten her as far as expected, her vet wanted to do more testing. We (of course) approved it.
Her foster went to see her. Sugar was shaking, very thin, and still working hard to breathe. She didn't care about her favorite treats or her stuffy. They sat together that afternoon, her foster petting her and talking to her, and promised her she'd be home soon to curl up on the bed with the kids. We're holding her to it ๐
Tuesday 10/6
Sugar had her best day yet. She was weaned off oxygen completely, and her breathing improved. She ate for the first time since arriving at the ER. She was much more active, she loved her walks outside, and her vet said it was the best she'd looked.
She isn't done fighting. Her nose is still draining, and her fever keeps going up and down (over 106 at some points). She is still shaking and doesn't feel well. She was underweight to begin with, and pneumonia has taken nearly 20% of her original weight in under two weeks. That's eight pounds she didn't have to lose. She needs to stay on antibiotics, but they're working to wean her off the pain medication.
We're still waiting on the results of her respiratory panel to look for other causes, and we're hopeful that having those answers will help us understand why she hasn't responded to antibiotics the way she should and give us an idea of what steps to take moving forward.
We did get some good news- if she keeps improving, she may be able to move out of the ER soon! Maybe even as soon as this afternoon!? ๐
Thank you to everyone who donated, shared, and rooted for her. We don't even want to think about where she would be without your support ๐

LOCATION: GROVE OK
ADOPTABLE ANYWHERE IN THE USA
Grady is an 18 month old, 55 pound Walker/Redtick Coonhound mix who is already housebroken, which puts him ahead of plenty of adults. He knows sit and stay, and he's happy to practice both for anyone who asks nicely.
He's great with other dogs. He plays well, and when playtime is over he doesn't make a fuss. Cats? No concerns at all. He's also been around kids from small to teenage, so he's seen the full range of human behavior- and he's here for all of it.
New people get a cautious first look from Grady. He can be a bit timid at first, but he warms up quick, and once you're in, you're in.
Grady turned up as a stray near Commerce, OK, and a kind person has kept him safe while the search for his people came up empty. Now he's ready to start the next chapter.
This guy is young, fun, and ready for a family who will teach him all the things.
