I have been meaning to comment on this for a while. It is a bit personal since it happened to me a about a year and a half ago. Everyone complains about their insurance rates, including me, however, to be honest there are a lot of drivers out there that are misinformed. A very large number of accidents could be avoided if people would just quit following so close. My wife was rear ended first, a couple months later my daughter was rear ended, neither suffered injuries but both cost insurance a chunk of change, and then a couple more months I was rear ended by a hummer and suffered a bad concussion. My car was totaled. I did not feel like doing anything for months. It was very difficult to concentrate. I didn't realize it at the time, but I guess I very easily could have died. If you drive down any highway you will see vehicle after vehicle following too close. Often, I will see 4 cars in a line going over 70 mph and there will be no more than 2 car links between them. You should get a ticket for this. You won't believe me when I tell you this, but you should be over 200 feet behind a car in front of you at highway speeds. You should always have 3 seconds between you for safe driving. When the car in front of you passes a sign, it should take you 3 seconds to get there. Almost no one is driving this way, but it would save so many lives. Does anyone have the right to drive in a manner that endangers other people?

Something interesting I have learned since becoming an insurance agent, and I learned it accidently since my wife, my daughter and I were all 3 rear-ended last year, if the wreck is clearly the fault of the other person you might hold off reporting to your own insurance company. The reason for this is because some carriers will count Not at Fault wrecks against you. I know it does not sound fair and clearly it is not. I was really worried as my renewal was coming due because as an insurance agent, I saw firsthand how it had been affecting people. Come to find out none of our wrecks showed up. And I now know why, we never reported any of them to our own company. I had heard many years ago before becoming an insurance agent if you report damage to your house after a storm it will be considered a claim even if your insurance company does not pay a dime. For instance, the damage is less than your deductible. My advice to you is always, always, always call your agent first to make sure you understand everything before calling the insurance company. That is why you have an agent.
