The allegations emerging from Cornell are devastating, and they underscore why conversations about sexual violence, consent, and bystander intervention matter.
At JWI, we know preventing gender-based violence requires more than telling women how to protect themselves. It requires all of us, especially men and young people, to recognize harmful behavior, speak up, and intervene when something is not right.
A group chat message. A concerning situation at a party. A friend crossing a line. These are moments when someone can choose to step in rather than look away.
Being an active bystander makes a difference.

Gloria Steinem spent more than six decades championing women’s rights, amplifying women’s voices, and challenging systems that limited women’s opportunities.
Her commitment to justice was also deeply connected to her Jewish roots. Steinem’s paternal grandmother, Pauline Perlmutter Steinem, was a Jewish suffragist and community leader whose activism helped shape Gloria’s understanding of what it means to stand up for women. Steinem later embraced Jewish feminist traditions, including women’s seders, and spoke openly about the ways Judaism informed her sense of justice and connection.
At JWI, we carry forward that same belief: when women stand together, we create greater opportunity, stronger communities, and a more equitable world.
May Gloria Steinem’s memory be a blessing, and may her legacy continue to inspire generations of women to speak up, lead boldly, and lift one another.
