I was in a FB group today and the parent was talking about how they didn’t think their newly-diagnosed kid is Autistic because they don’t match certain traits.
Someone then asked why they even pursued a diagnosis if they didn’t think their kid is Autistic.
That question always confuses me and it confused the parent too. Like, is it normal to “pursue” a diagnosis??
I wasn’t even close to seeing mental health professionals for any kind of diagnoses, and when I got some, I was in denial, ashamed, and angry like the parent was.
I thought people normally got most diagnoses randomly and not even thinking about it. I was told to go to mental health professionals from other doctors or while in a crisis and had no other choice.
Edit for clarity: Okay, I think I am confusing everyone. The parent did go through the referral, did all of the waiting and days of evaluation and got the official diagnosis and doesn’t agree with it.
The referral and diagnostic process is all in one in my mind. The whole process from beginning to end is one “diagnosis” to me.
So I am asking really if most people aren’t thinking about getting a referral. Like, of course if you get a referral you go to it.
My question is: Aren’t most people surprised to get a referral at no request of their own?

Exactly why all societies should be centered around caregiving and caregivers. Everyone and anyone may need caregivers or become caregivers at any moment in their lives

Happy 17th Birthday Gabe!
Yesterday you asked me to tell you the story of your life. You said “IT’S NICE TO REMEMBER.” I completely agree. The day you were born was the best day of my life and each day since I feel grateful that your father left me with one last gift. Your dad lives on through you. You make us so proud. He would feel that way too.
The life you have lead from even before you were born is that of strength, courage, and inspiration.
You have had to overcome so many things to get to where you are today and you have so much ahead you still. Getting to share in all your accomplishments has been the greatest joy of my life. I hang on your every word when you are spelling. Getting to know you on a deeper level over the last few years is a dream come true. Seeing you spell and knowing what your thoughts, dreams, and just what you want for your birthday is priceless. I never thought I would get the chance to have a real conversation with you and now we get to that regularly. I know how much that means to you too. I can’t imagine what it was like for you before you could fluently spell. You handled it so well by adapting to life without being able to speak. You managed to develop deep relationships with so many people without saying a word. Your eyes said it all, you just needed the right people who would listen. There are so many people who love you, Gabe. People you have never even met! You are showing the world that nonspeaking doesn’t mean you can’t understand things. You understand more than most people. We can all learn so much from you. You have shown me that the point of life is love. You knew that innately and constantly remind me that love is all that really matters. You said it best. We have ONE LIFE TO LIVE TO THE FULLEST and I am proud of you for having that attitude in spite of all the challenges that you are constantly being faced with.
This year you gave me a birthday and a Mother’s Day card for the first time. Cards that you wrote yourself. I don’t think I can express what that has meant to me. You are doing so many things now that you couldn’t before. I hope you see how far you have come and know that you are capable of so much!
This birthday is extra special because you got to plan it yourself. You never had the ability to do that before spelling. You work so hard every day and it shows.
I can’t wait to see what this upcoming year has in store for you. I know you are going to have the best year yet!
Love you, Mom
