Some updates we can share with you all:

1. We added three additional board members to our board this year

DC has needed a bold vision for young people for quite some time.

But that vision can’t be created without them. It starts with listening to young people, by hearing directly from them about what they need to thrive. Then aligning our city’s services, resources, and support to meet those needs.

That’s the work we do at Critical Exposure, and it’s the work we’ll continue to do: creating space for young people to lead, speak up, and help shape the decisions that impact their lives.

Because the goal is bigger than any one program or organization. We want a city where every young person, in every school, in every community, has access to what they need to thrive.

And we’ll keep working alongside DC youth toward that vision 📸✊🏾

Calling all DC high school writers ✍🏼✍🏽✍🏾✍🏿

Our friends at 826DC are accepting applications for their Youth Writers in Residence program, and we want to make sure the young people in our network know about this opportunity!

Youth Writers in Residence gives DC students in grades 9–12 the chance to develop their own independent writing projects, receive mentorship from 826DC staff, and grow as leaders in their community.

Participants can also take on opportunities like mentoring younger writers, public speaking, creating resources for younger students, and supporting student publications. Students may earn community service hours or a stipend with consistent attendance.

📅 Applications are due September 18 (TODAY).

Know a student who loves writing, storytelling, or using their voice? Send this post their way!

We’re making room for what’s next 📸

Over the past year, we’ve been working behind the scenes to improve our office and youth space. Creating an environment where DC young people have the space, tools, and resources they need to create, organize, and tell their own stories.

Our latest update: a bigger, secure equipment closet for our cameras, photography gear, and other tools our young people use to document their communities and make their voices heard.
