People think my job is making a kitchen pretty, but where I really ass value is in making sure it works first, then making it pretty.

That includes sight-lines from the living room, where the vacation mugs hide, how the ceiling changes from beam to plank to flat to tell you which room you’re standing in. Those calls got made here, before a single wall went up.

Three sides of island seating meant the refrigerator could not open once anyone sat on that side…

Final Design | Portola Valley, CA

Rooms: Kitchen, kids bath, powder bath

The catch: seating wrapped three sides of the island, which put a stool inside the refrigerator door swing. Same plan had hanging lanterns under an 8 foot ceiling. Even at their shortest adjusted height they would have dropped into the sightline across the island.

The fix: seating moved to the back side of the island only. Full depth storage cabinets added to the back side. Lanterns swapped for a single linear pendant that mounts higher and keeps the range wall and slab backsplash visible from the room.

Caught now, this is a plan revision. Caught after the island cabinetry is built and the stone is templated, add the cost of new cabinetry and three to four weeks on the schedule.

*INITIAL DESIGN*
This Jacksonville home has a great layout, but it’s buried under a sea of angles, archways, and a cabinetry layout that just felt awkward and out of touch with the way we live and move between the kitchen and living spaces today.

By removing the peninsula we were able to create a 9’ island, coffee bar, shallow depth pantry for dry goods and snacks (no forgetting if you’re out of breadcrumbs bc they’re buried at the back of the cabinet here), and improve the flow.

INITIAL DESIGN

Classic Hamptons design is all about the details.

Coffered ceilings, beautiful millwork, paneled walls, warm white oak, natural marble, and unlacquered brass come together to create a home that feels timeless instead of trendy.

Designing everything in 3D first gave us the chance to perfect the layout, cabinetry, and material palette before construction began or materials were ordered.

Warm wood, blue-gray painted cabinetry, delft tile patterned tile, and soapstone round out the tasteful and classic design for my client in Bridgewater VA.

There’s teamwork engrained throughout this design, created bit by bit in Chief Architect Software. Here’s the final edits from the Ponce Inlet Beach FL project.

The mandate was coastal, but not too coastal, and after a few tweaks these beautiful spaces join the primary bath I shared last week and are ready to build!

This New Orleans remodel required a fresh layout, cabinetry, and materials while keeping gas and water lines in largely the same place and preserving the original Saltillo tile floors.
Through a few iterations, my clients are ready to build and order cabinetry with confidence.

What size should the window be?
Is there room to create a reach in food pantry?
Can the hood liner sit that high above the range top?
With 12.5’ ceilings, where should we split the upper cabinets?

Two islands. Each features seating so no matter where you’re working in this kitchen, you’re never far from the action.

The hood liner is 48” above the range. Typically you want to aim for 30-36”, but the size of the liner and the setup of the surrounding cabinetry which creates a “cove” earned the green light from the manufacturer for placement high enough to create this incredible plaster hood surround that balances the wall.

The custom plaster hood dies into a bank of cabinetry that creates a symmetrical frame and provides storage to make use of the ultra tall ceiling height.

9’ wide x 6’ tall triple casement windows. With 12.5’ ceilings, there’s no reason to obscure maximum natural light.

The main sink is a 48” workstation with all the essential accessories like cutting boards, colanders, and strainers built in.

48” tall antique mirror inset doors pocket when this appliance garage is in use, or hide the countertop appliances away in style when closed.

We grouped all the cooking appliances on this side of the room for easy access when prepping and cooking, and added a prep sink to avoid walking across the room for a quick rinse.

Arabescato Corchia FTW 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

This morning bar features an under-counter beverage fridge and ice machine with open shelving for glass and stemware. Placed on the opposite end of the kitchen from the range, guests can mix up a cocktail and keep clear of the cook/prep zone.

Not a bad angle in sight…

The Hendricks pendant by Ralph Lauren x Visual Comfort hangs 42” above the counter top. Higher than the typical 33-36” we typically recommend. But with 12.5’ ceilings, they help lift the eye to appreciate the dramatic scale of the room.

This Florida new build primary bath was designed from the floor plan out. The steam shower, sauna, freestanding tub, double vanity, and private water closet all have room to breathe because the layout came first.

That’s exactly what I help my clients do. Before construction starts, we solve the functionality, then bring it to life in 3D so you, your contractor, and your cabinet maker are all building from the same vision.
