I'm especially curious whether parents and educators see this differently.

A student gets the right answer.
But when I ask, “Why does that work?” — silence.

That moment always makes me think about what it really means to learn mathematics.

I recently revisited Gadanidis’ Deconstructing Constructivism, and one idea especially resonated with me: students don't simply receive knowledge from a teacher. They construct understanding through their experiences, prior knowledge, questions, connections, and discoveries.

Think about something as simple as:

Area of a triangle = ½ × base × height

A student may memorize the formula and use it correctly.

But can they explain why we multiply by ½?

Can they take a rectangle, divide it diagonally, and see where the formula comes from?

Sometimes, a little humor is all it takes to make a difficult math concept memorable.

When I teach students how to solve multivariable equations, I give them a silly reminder:

They laugh the first time they hear it.

But behind that silly phrase is a sequence of steps they need to remember when solving complex algebraic equations. Instead of memorizing a list of procedures, they have a simple phrase that helps them recall what to do and, more importantly, why each step matters.

And that is exactly what I want for my students.

I want students to be able to approach challenging algebra without feeling overwhelmed. If a difficult problem can become a little more memorable, a little more enjoyable, and a lot less intimidating, then I consider that a win.

Sometimes, a silly phrase can stay in a student's brain longer than a page of notes ever could.

WELCOME TO THE 2026-27 ACADEMIC YEAR

Congratulations and welcome to all the families who have enrolled for the new academic year at Ms. Ams Math Tutoring Academy.

Our academic sessions begin August 17th.

I have already started screening and assessing new students since August 11th to understand their current skills, identify learning gaps, and determine the right level of support for each student. Newly enrolled families will also be receiving their confirmed tutoring schedules and time slots soon.

Last year was another rewarding year of student growth, with 90% of my students achieving strong academic results. I am especially proud of our AP students who earned 4s and 5s on AP Statistics, AP Calculus AB, and AP Calculus BC.

Every new academic year is a new opportunity to strengthen foundations, close gaps, build confidence, and move forward with purpose.

I am excited to begin this new journey with my returning students, students who joined us through the Summer Program, newly enrolled students, and families currently completing their assessments while waiting for available spots.

Progress begins with consistency. Growth begins with the right guidance. Success follows when students believe they can do it.
