Harvesting Sedge 🌿
Sedge, locally known as Cói, is a traditional agricultural activity deeply rooted in the rural life of coastal and lowland communities.
The harvesting process typically takes place two to three times a year. Farmers manually cut the tall, slender stalks close to the base using simple tools like sickles. Because sedge is often grown in waterlogged fields, the work can be physically demanding, requiring long hours under the sun.
After cutting, the stalks are carefully sorted and tied into bundles based on length and quality. They are then transferred over the river to dry area spread out under direct sunlight for several days to dry, turning from fresh green to a light golden color. Proper drying is essential to ensure the durability and flexibility of the fibers.
Beyond its economic value, sedge harvesting plays an important cultural role. It supports local livelihoods and sustains long-standing craft traditions in which farming and weaving are closely connected. This practice reflects both the resourcefulness of rural communities and their ability to adapt natural materials into practical and artistic products.

A spectacular sunset in Mu Cang Chai during new crop season 🌾🐃🔥

Mù Cang Chải during the green season is a breathtaking display of life, renewal, and harmony between people and nature. From around June to August, the terraced rice fields transform into layers of vivid green as young rice plants begin to grow, covering the mountainsides like soft, living carpets.
At this time, the terraces - carefully carved by generations of the Hmong people - are filled with water from seasonal rains. As the rice seedlings take root, the landscape gradually turns into a lush, vibrant green, stretching across hills and valleys.

Traditional seafood market 🐟🦑🦞
Before sunrise, often as early as 3:30 or 4:00 AM, the market comes alive as fishing boats return from the sea carrying their overnight catch. The atmosphere is intense and vivid, with locals quickly buying and selling the catch. Though crowded and noisy, it offers an authentic glimpse into daily life and the seafood trade in the region.
