"Peter Hyde, purveyor of tormenting screams announces they’re going to play 3 songs back to back. This clearly ain’t going to be a grind core set.

To those who know Whitehorse, you know your ears and body is in for some punishment. If you’re a fan of the likes of sludge and doom, Whitehorse will have you entranced in a death march, trudging willingly straight into the underworld; you find yourself falling into the gravelly path only to be ran over- agonisingly slowly, by a steamroller by the 6 burly blokes who make up the band. If you are intrigued by anything more than that, Whitehorse will surprise you with huge sonic textures, David Coen generates ‘noise’ in the form of huge inorganic soundscapes that weave through the drums and stringed sections. Blending riffs and songs alike into each other- this element vastly sets this band apart from others within the genre.

The set is hypnotic and punters sway to the rhythm- the foundations of The Catfish are tested with the crushing set. The crescendos of the set are staggering, imagine going from doom and getting glimpses of extreme metal in rapid tempo change- drums shifting, guitars into rapid tremolo as an avalanche throws debris upon you. The bands two guitarists along with their bassist pulverises you as if you’re in the path of a freight train."

"Atop darkened hills, an alliance comprised of strings that sometimes coruscate and a folktale-loving violin breathes borderline countryside energy into the first two tracks, though this sequestered shine is dimmed each time a caveman-like roar's suction debilitates it, and this creates a sensation that is akin to the evening twilight. The riffs are analogous to footsteps that are antagonized by impure memories, and it's obvious this weight is influencing our steps when we realize we are plodding, rather than skittering, across the secretive valley.

"Soliloquy" brings us to the "terminus" of this land, and this time, futility is clearly understood. Overcoming this godforsaken place's most drastic incline offers no respite, for it reveals that it is not the expanse's final obstacle. As this revelatory moment dawns, we recall a contemplative piece of literature and analyze it in our heads in the hope of deciding whether or not we should keep on trying or accept the absence of fruitfulness.

Quickly attacked singular guitar lines and chunky riffs that pass through blaring distortion, topped with deep barks and backed up with blast-beaten drums are the familiar components of death metal, however that fast action represents brief moments on “Anhedonic”, as it spends most of its time mired in torpid, depressive movements, dragging the death metal into doom/death territory."
